Anyone else kill their battery with the trunk?

Twice now I've walked out to my car, pressed the unlock button and nothing happened.. The first time was like a week after I got the car and I thought "oh shit it's broken already" and then after a ton of checking I noticed the trunk was JUST ever so slightly popped open. (It's surprising how hard it is to tell at a glance)
Well it just happened again, and this time with my fancy LiFePO battery :(
Here's to see how well they take getting COMPLETELY drained and recharged..

Debating either leaving the trunk disabled OR if I can get away with just removing the bulb from the trunk..

Why are you using a LiFePO battery?

CruiseZen 07-21-2014 08:30 PM

Had that happen to me. Now I always make sure to check the trunk is securely closed before I walk away.

Because unlike other lightweight batteries it cranks like stock.
And it's baller.

I am popping it with the key, I almost never use the trunk which makes it double annoying when this happens :(
But then if I disable the trunk it will be annoying not being able to pop it when I do want to..

Any half assed lithium cell or package should have low voltage protection that does not let it actually drain below a set voltage. Typically when you reach that preset limit it will been the circuit to protect the cell(s). Id ask the manufacturer and also check it with a multimeter.

Had this happen to me also.

Swapped out the 5Watt light bulb (437mA) with a low power T10 LED (20mA).

With the LED and dash indicator the current draw is ~80mA, this will allow the light to be on for about 2 weeks with enough power left in the stock battery to start the car.

Awesome where did you order that from?

Shorai battery, I wish I had bought the earthX one since it HAS the over discharge AND charge controller ON the battery.
If this one is toast I will buy EarthX

Google is your friend. This one's on the autozone website. It's mine now. Get your own.

Got mine from a local electronics store.

The lowest power ones will be ~20mA, you can source from ebay

The cre LEDs will be brighter but consume more power ~80mA

Wait, I didn't read closely enough. If I get the 20mA bulb I can leave my trunk open for 2 months? Damn it!

You will get about 10 days with that LED, (stock battery down to 30% capacity). Much better than stock bulb (totally dead in 4.5 days)

Lawnik 07-22-2014 12:18 AM

Yes:mad0260:

But I just took the bulb out and crushed it

With the Shorai charger it recovered quickly

Lol

Hah ya I think I'll do the same.
I don't need a light in there, the trunk is rarely used except hauling stuff to the track.

Them FEELS! I read about EarthX after I bought the Shorai. :bonk:

The BMS is built into the EarthX; it's the only lithium ion starter battery I've seen properly setup like that!

I found the supplier that manufactures the Shorai battery and they have optional hardware to add a BMS. But it's an additional circuit board that has to be integrated into the packaging; it's not something you can really buy on your own and bolt on to your battery. I might just order parts and build my own next time.

The EarthX and Shorai are not Lithium Ion but Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. Quite different.

Chimera 07-22-2014 01:03 PM

cheap led strip from kmart, auto zone, etc, and 2 spade connectors and you have an upgrade + lights that `virtually` can never drain your battery.

*eyeroll* Lithium Ion is a generic name covering all the lithium ion based battery chemistries. But thanks...

denkigrve 07-22-2014 01:20 PM

Ha. I had this happen once. Props to @quark for the low power bulb tips!

Happened to me once. I'm really careful to confirm the trunk is closed now. I notice it closes completely easier now than when the car was new.

I open the trunk fairly often. I keep detailer spray in the back, as well as an umbrella and my sunshade. And I do use it for groceries or home depot runs.

I did replace the bulb for a brighter LED. Didn't even think about the low power aspect. Nice!

I'd just say hit the button and turn the key fob trunk opener off and have to use key to open the trunk. That would save your batt.

How about not closing the trunk like a little girl?

Ernie L 07-23-2014 09:23 PM

I don't think it is the trunk bulb that is draining the battery. with my headlight switch in AUTO mode and trunk open the headlights stayed on. They did not go out after a short interval when exiting the car as they normally do. I was parked in my garage and unloading packages from the trunk. I made a couple of trips and noticed that the headlights were still on..Once I shut the trunk the headlights went out shortly after..as they normally would.

I do not know if they would have stayed on or not if I had not closed the trunk. My guess is they would have.... its a convenience feature I assume....This may not happen if you park in the daylight..my garage is an under house garage and fairly shady even in daylight..the auto headlights do come on when I pull in to it.

I'm not sure if the running lights would act the same way if you parked in the daylight with headlight switch in AUTO and the trunk open...I going to see about that
