In the case of the 1st86, there really isn't any way of telling which one you were unless we compared delivery dates, I suppose. We could use the number on the CF Frame we received, which would make me "3 of 86", but I know there were others that took delivery before me.
On all the cars, you could use the VIN (last 5 digits), but that really doesn't mean much except that you picked a color that was in a certain part of the manufacturing order.

Yes, VIN# is the order it was produced at the factory, and the only real order to the sequence of the car as it left the production line. Keep in mind that cars that went to Japan and other parts have a different series of numbers so it isn't per similar frame. VIN Order only applies to your locale and is in two sets in the USA, between Subaru branded BRZ and Scion branded FRS. FHI would have EXACT order of production globally for accounting and QC's sake, but really isn't an important information since it isn't like an Lexus LFA which are made to order per customer.
As for the First86, our cars were not made to order either and depending on the location of delivery, color choice, and transmission, it was allocated to our dealership from the nearest and closest match that was part of the original port shipment of many other cars, so VIN numbers are pretty random as well. I was the 2nd delivery of the First 86, the 86th member to be selected as alternate, and my car is VIN 00348 because that was the whiteout in AT that I ordered which happened to be closest and assigned to the dealership I chose to have it delivered. Carbon frame and pen we got from Scion USA as part of First 86 is random too, and is only according to the Five Axis Designs that made the frames, and Scion HQ staff that assigned one to each customer in the 86, but not in delivery sequence.
The First 86 delivery does mark the FIRST car that was delivered from each respective dealership though... (unless the selected buyer didn't purchase the assigned car for one reason or another.)
