What number do you have?

How to tell what issue number your FR-S is?

Not sure what you mean? Are you referring to the 1st86, the car in general, or something else.

In the case of the 1st86, there really isn't any way of telling which one you were unless we compared delivery dates, I suppose. We could use the number on the CF Frame we received, which would make me "3 of 86", but I know there were others that took delivery before me.

On all the cars, you could use the VIN (last 5 digits), but that really doesn't mean much except that you picked a color that was in a certain part of the manufacturing order.

Yes, VIN# is the order it was produced at the factory, and the only real order to the sequence of the car as it left the production line. Keep in mind that cars that went to Japan and other parts have a different series of numbers so it isn't per similar frame. VIN Order only applies to your locale and is in two sets in the USA, between Subaru branded BRZ and Scion branded FRS. FHI would have EXACT order of production globally for accounting and QC's sake, but really isn't an important information since it isn't like an Lexus LFA which are made to order per customer.

As for the First86, our cars were not made to order either and depending on the location of delivery, color choice, and transmission, it was allocated to our dealership from the nearest and closest match that was part of the original port shipment of many other cars, so VIN numbers are pretty random as well. I was the 2nd delivery of the First 86, the 86th member to be selected as alternate, and my car is VIN 00348 because that was the whiteout in AT that I ordered which happened to be closest and assigned to the dealership I chose to have it delivered. Carbon frame and pen we got from Scion USA as part of First 86 is random too, and is only according to the Five Axis Designs that made the frames, and Scion HQ staff that assigned one to each customer in the 86, but not in delivery sequence.

The First 86 delivery does mark the FIRST car that was delivered from each respective dealership though... (unless the selected buyer didn't purchase the assigned car for one reason or another.)

Agreed on all. And to even more complicate it, even though you know you were number 86, that doesn't fully "stick" since there were 86'ers that didn't buy their cars and others bought them from stock rather than the car being passed to an alternate. So, in theory, there really aren't 86 1st86ers unless you now pull these fortunate few into the fold.

Gotcha. Bottom line you've got a early first year production unit. If they do make 10K this year, you are in the first 11.42% of Scion units. Mine is 274.

That said, there are more than likely multiple 1142 or 274 units if all you look at is VIN. As Moto-P said, there's a lot of factors outside of VIN to consider to see where you fall in the grand scheme of things.

Well it means your FRS is the 1142nd one to roll off the production line, as VIN number does follow order of assembly, as a Scion FRS, produced for the USA, and inclusive of the first few production vehicles Toyota corporate decided to keep for various reasons, whether museum storage or PR, marketing use. This does not include though the handful of the Pre-Production units which do not have VIN numbers and were mostly hand-assembled for previews and testing in final form, as well as calibration of plant tooling, and PR firms and aftermarket R&D.

But for all practical purposes of collection or identity, it is indeed the 1142nd car made in the assembly line, and shipped for general consumer registered car as Scion FRS, USA model (I think includes Canada and certain parts of the world like Guam and Puerto Rico that also get US-DOT certified vehicles. And as such it will be valid to say you have the 1142nd FRS in the USA, by manufacture sequence, and of the cars that are allowed to be sold and registered in the USA.

So, does that mean that regardless of all the digits before it (transmission code, etc), the last 5 digits are indeed sequential within the things that make it a North American Scion or BRZ? For example, there is not an 1142 that is an AT and an 1142 that is a MT?

I'm 63 of 86!

clayrush 05-27-2012 11:36 PM

I know the date my car was built. 4/4/2012
I don't have my vin number, but on some paperwork my dealer gave me a month ago it has a serial number of D1701683, so maybe 1683?

AustinTCLN 05-27-2012 11:58 PM

I got vin #147 & 12/86 cf plate frame & pen, whiteout manual. I remember looking at the vins on the cars we test drove in CA and I thought they were like 110 to 120 or so
