Hungry Mice In Engine Compartment
Looks like some hungry mice were eating some of the engine compartment sound deadening insulation in my BRZ during the late winter. Any thoughts how to keep them out in the future?

I've heard that peppermint oil works. Don't even waste your time trying to reason with them. It's like talking to a brick wall.

Leave the hood open and hang or shine a light on it for a week straight. Fixed mine back in the day. Mice like dark and confined places.

Pet stores sell a bitter apple spray that tastes terrible and keeps cats and dogs away from anything it's sprayed on. Don't know if it works on mice, but it sure worked on my cat who loved to chew on electrical wires.

This does the trick for me
This works for me:

find a free cat somewhere. Male and orange are your best bet, as they will kill anything and are more than happy to live outside and on their own without you. I have one on my property. If it gets hungry it moves closer to the house. Once all the mice are dead, if its winter and still hungry it gets really close to the house and I throw it some food once in awhile. Then it moves away and continues eating critters back out at the perimeter.
Got him for free and locked him in the garage for a week when I found mice in my toolbox. Mice urine is corrosive. |

But if you do get a cat, it's a crap shoot for mouse hunting, unless you find one with a track record. I've had 5 cats, 2 of which were good hunters, 1 of the two was a beast who would even bring home oversized rabbits (the other one had a Bird fascination). Cats that were found in the wild and brought in are your best bet, even if they're still kittens they probably were taught to hunt. |
