Frontpipe hassle

Last night I snapped a bolt on the flange between the frontpipe and overpipe. Anyone else have this happen?

Takumi788 07-10-2014 01:08 PM

I did...what a nightmare. Long story short, remove the heat shields, remove the over pipe, drill out the old stud and weld in a new one. Or buy a new over-pipe.

A friend had the same problem. Its because Subaru over torques the exhaust nuts.

@Takumi788 i cant tell if the stud is welded in the overpipe side or if its threaded in really tight. do you know?

Akari 07-10-2014 03:42 PM

It's just threaded in if I recall.

One of mine wanted to break when removing it but with enough finesse and PB Blaster I managed to get it loose.

Happened to me too. I was able to get it out though and clean up the threads using a tap. I was fortunate my buddy had a spare stud and lives next to me.

so i could probably just double nut it out and then get a new stud to install?

If you are planning on coming down to the Everett area (or anywhere near by) you can have my stock one.

I'm heading up to Monroe for FD... could I have it? I have had a number of these studs snap on various local cars and I am out of extras to help replace them.

Wont be in town for FD :(. I'll be in Portland in August (don't remember when exactly) But I can swing by and drop it off. Or if anyone else in the area that is going to FD wants to bring it with them, I will hand it off.

Thanks @Imrac!

@DarrenDriven are you going to 86 nights? I can pick up a handful of them and bring them when I go down there on the 25th

wasnt able to get 2 nuts on the stud to get it off so i welded a nut to it and tried turning it and it snapped again. I unbolted the overpipe. I was unable to extract the stud so I drilled it out and used a 10 x 1.25 tap to rethread it. Then the tap SNAPPED INSIDE THE FLANGE ON THE OVERPIPE. I had to drill that out and put a new bolt in it. I have an excuse to get an overpipe now :burnrubber:

After reading on the forums about how people got their overpipes out, mine was surprisingly easy. Once the heat shield was removed I was able to slide it out the front. It was easy to remove and reinstall. I was unable to get the top part of the heatshield on the frontpipe side back on because of the bolt I had to put in.
