What header and front pipe? UEL? If yes, how does it sound?

Go catless and run stage2 map and you will have a big smile on your face. Worst case scenario just swap back your stock header.

I'm considering buying a UEL header which does not have a cat like the stock header. Has anyone heard of people getting nailed either at a mobile inspection stop or at regular inspection and been fined?

Isn't the bottom of the cat where the header is covered by a metal plate? How would the officer even catch this on a visual inspection?

It seems like nobody is really concerned with this, the fine is hefty too.

Correct me if I'm wrong. If I run catless there will definitely be a noticeable smell, but if I have at least 1 cat it won't smell any different than stock?

@B-R-Z if youre going for straight sound i just threw a 2.5" catted perrin frontpipe on my car with my catback it sounds good and isnt annoying while cruising.

You better get a tune, if you switch out the headers.

Podge 07-10-2014 10:19 PM

kind of unrelated but where i come from, removing cats will get you a fine of $2k per cylinder

Insane, where do you live? Imagine having a catless V12 and getting popped :O

Ris Yes but I want the boxer rumble. I'm bored with my regular exhaust sound. Though, it is quiet and nice for my commuting.

In the event that you are driving and for some odd reason you get caught, depending on municipality your car could get impounded. I am an attorney in NJ, so I would not advise it.

At the risk of a backlash from the owners, I'm not sure why us 86/FR-S/BRZ owners should consider ourselves "special" and able to ignore the emission laws.

I'm a long, long way from being a greenie but the air quality in our cities is so much better having emission controls for vehicles and more particularly industry.

Just live with the cats guys and find other ways to get the performance/sound/looks you want. Unless you've gone FI we don't really own "performance" cars anyway.

B-R-Z 07-11-2014 08:16 PM

I have no problem running a cat but the catted headers are close to a grand, which I would never pay for a header. At that price you are almost paying a quarter of a turbo kit.

My understanding was that if you're catless (without spacer), you will throw a check engine light. You can get a tune to turn off the CEL, but that also disables OBD readiness. I could be wrong though.

I don't know about the tuning solutions on this platform,

but with some of the others you can force readiness.

My forester is catless and evap deleted, it passes the obd scan and readiness monitors fine and has for several years.
