Keep or sell 4runner to get frs/brz?
I'm going to be buying one of the twins sometime after December. If I sell my 4runner I can buy it very soon because of the trade in. If I wait 2 or 3 extra months I could keep it for the PA winters. Long story short, the 4runner is a beast in the snow and I'm nervous about driving a rwd sports car in the snow. Although everyone on here says just get winter tires and it's fine. Help!

I'm in Canada and drove my FRS in through one of the biggest snow winters in recent years.
Man up, put some snow tires on, and have fun. |
I think you have all of the information you need. Hold on to the 4runner - selling it without another car to drive in the snow would be a bad move.
FWIW - I am looking at buying a 4runner for a winter rig right now. |
Ya man, be smart and hold off. 4 runners are beast, the 86 ain't going no where. You may have better options down the line.

I kept my Jeep. Regardless of snow, sometimes you just need some extra cargo space or a more rugged vehicle.

The FRS is my daily. Minnesnowta wasn't easy this year for most people..... But I didn't have much issue. Just don't drive it on a frozen lake with patches of 10 inch high snow drifts like I did at christmas. Your family makes fun of you.
Good set of snow tires and you will be good. I ran goodyear WRT ultra grip ice, not bad overall I would give them a solid 8.5 out of 10 |
I'm probably going to try and keep the 4runner. On top of snow driving and extra space, I just can't part with it. It's a 2001 which is one of my favorite year 4runners and was my first car.

dude keep the 4runner... save up and buy the fr-s as a second car. hear too much crap about this car in the winter on these forums.

2001 was probably the pinnacle of that line. I would never sell that thing if I were you

Just think about this. You sell your 4runner. Two months later you want to build shelves for your garage. You go to Home Depot, buy lumber, and put it in... what?
You don't always need a truck, but when you do need one, nothing else will do. |
I sold my 4Runner to get an FR-S. We swapped it for a Rav4 for my wife (she doesn't like big cars), so it freed me up to get whatever I liked. Should have my FR-S in around a month.

I kept my 2000 Xterra when I got the FR-S. She was my first new car and I've loved her, good and bad, all along.
We resolved to keep the X, use the FR-S for commutes and fun, and do some fix up work to have the big girl for hauling stuff and adventures. A little over a year later and <$3K into the Xterra and she's strong as ever ready for our upcoming backpacking trip. I'm going to keep her as long as possible. About 202K on the clock now. . . I'm in sunny SoCal, so winters are nonexistent, but for hauling stuff around and taking us on outdoor adventures (not to mention 4-5 people), the FR-S won't cut it. |
