Resonated vs. Non-Resonated Perrin Catback
I'm trying to decide between resonated and non-resonated for the perrin catback. I want the exhaust to be noticeably louder than stock while sounding good and not being obnoxious. From what I've read the resonated perrin is quiet compared to others which is why i'm looking at the non-resonated. Should I go with resonated or non-resonated.

it depends. do you plan on upgrading the rest of the exhaust system too? if all you want to do is a catback then un-resonated all the way.
if you're planning on doing a header/op/fp/then reosnated would be the smarter move. |
I know this question all too well. When I first got my car I ordered the perrin header back non resonated system (before they got rid of the cat Pipe) and it sounded great until I ordered headers that's when it got bad. The rasp was so bad I was embarrassed to drive my car so I ordered the resonated pipe and it sounded so much better. Zero rasp.

Yea i'm just doing a catback. I want it to sound louder than stock but not annoying. I don't want to regret not getting the non-resonated either so i may just do that

Based from my experience lol. I was between those 2 also. I went with the 3in resonated because volume wise it was like the 2.5 unreso just without the rasp. I added headers and things were still great nice bass and all.
Until. I added front pipe, my neighbours started asking me if I bought a race car. IMHO get the resonated. Unless... Because race car |
I'd recommend going resonated with either the 2.5" or 3" system. It'll just help keep the volume down when you upgrade later down the road. I'd recommend going with a catted front pipe and catted header if you decide to change those, it'll help keep the volume down as well. Even catted systems used with an unresonated system can be pretty loud.

I love my 3" Perrin resonated system downstream from the turbo. Plenty of awesome sound.
Don't see a reason to go unresonated, unless you like to be heard everywhere you go |
I used to have the resonated mid pipe and it wasn't loud enough for me. It was noticeable louder than stock but not by a lot. I got my hands in a non resonated mid pipe for the perrin CBE and omg did it sound much better. It gave it a more deeper tone.

Love my non-resonated. When I first installed it the noise level was concerning, but after a few hundred miles it really mellowed out. I'd say the volume level is on the high side of perfect with no rasp (except during cold start) or drone. I don't plan on doing any other exhaust mods though, or I would have gone resonated for sure.

I get compliments on my 2.5 non resonated all the time.
Hell I've even had several people pull up next to me at stop lights and ask what brand of exhaust I have and tell me it sounds great. It is definitely a deep throaty sound with no rasp. FTR I am full stock exhaust except for the catback. |

If you're even considering upgrading the header, overpipe, and front pipe eventually, I'd get the resonated exhaust. |
Check out this review, post #3 has some pretty good recordings:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16614 Unfortunately the comparison recordings are on a dyno, but it gives a very good idea of the difference in sound between the two. Most YouTube videos recorded with a phone or a GoPro just don't capture the lower frequencies. It's still not going to be quite the same as seeing/feeling it in person though. |
I'm planning on doing the 2.5" Catback, resonated. I would really like a Perrin front pipe as well. I'm aware they have been discontinued but does anyone know where I can find one? If I have to, I'd even go with a used one in good shape.
