Opinion on my next mod

What's up guys, I have a mini dilemma that I could use your opinions on. I'm planning my next mod and I am torn on what I want to do next. My two choices are a lip kit (front, side, and rear) or lowering the car. I could do both, but gotta put some money away for retirement, haha. Would the car look weird with the lips on stock suspension and wheels? If so, I think lowering would be my best bet. Any input from more seasoned individuals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

I'm more seasoned - very we'll seasoned

Lower the car

I'd Lower it. Would look way better than a lip kit in my opinion.

What do you have for rims on your twin?

ill hopefully be dropping mine an inch in the next few months.

I see it as a cosmetic mod (ie lip kit) vs. a cosmetic+functional (as in may affect the behavior of the suspension, not necessarily improve it) mod (ie lowering springs). It all depends on what you want in the end (which I realize is what you are asking us here :D)

To me, the "safer"/more conservative mod would be the lip kit if you are worried about ride quality, clearances, potential for creaking, etc. I've seen a handful of folks with the lip kit at stock height and they don't look half bad (but BigFatFlip, you may ask, DAT GAP THO....)

I'm running stock wheels right now, but plan on getting myself some BBS wheels by years end, just gotta research some wheel specs others are using.

I've never driven a lowered car before haha (This is my first tuner car). I was considering the lip kit before dropping it because I wanted to see how low the car was with the kit. Once I get used to the clearance with the lip, I was gonna drop the car.

Will you be bumping up to 18"s or sticking at 17?

I plan on staying on 17 for a few years and figured lowering the car would fill the gap around the wheel a bit.

I'm not big on lip kits, body kits, and spoilers in general. I do like certain low profile looks, but would rather spend my money on an item that can be a functional one.

lower it

I'm thinking of staying on 17s if BBS makes the wheels I want on 17s. The lip I want is the OEM STI one, but sounds like lowering the car should come first.

Lower it this month. Then if u still have clearance at the spots u go to, get the lip kit next month. You know youre going to do both anyways. Save a little, spend a little.

To me the gap needs to go and a lip kit wont solve that. If u pick the right springs ride quality will not suffer.

finch1750 06-25-2014 12:29 AM

Lower it. RCE is my personal choice, but Swifts would be a close second. Ride quality wont suffer with either and handlibg will improve while eliminating wheel gap.

Pkus, you would be surprised how mich you scrape stock and lowered. Dont wanna drop a ton on a lip only to chew it up on the regular.

So looks like the consensus is to lower it first, I'll take a look at different brands...now just to research how much of a drop I want, thanks again for all the advice guys.

Lowering a car correctly is expensive. You'd need camber adjustments front and rear, an alignment, and of course springs. And even then, your shocks' life will be dramatically reduced. You're looking at something like $800 for an almost-good drop.

I'd do the lip kit. In my opinion it's actually better to cheap out on a lip kit because when you inevitably bottom out you're not damaging anything pricey. A couple hundred dollars and it'll ride and handle just as well as it does now, but look better.

JackSmiley 06-25-2014 07:47 AM

I'd say none of the two choices. Get some wheels (doesnt have to be namebrand) and good rubber. then lower the car on springs (or if you have extra cash get some decent coilovers), then lip kit. TBH, the brz looks OK lowered without a lip kit.
