Just... no. California has 37M people; being Californian is not a deciding factor in friendship. Or "You were at Base X? Do you know John?" ... nope. |

Fucking awesome you dropped this. The point I'm getting at is that it would be cool to have at least a couple buddies with the same chassis. I have other 'car-guy' friends who drive different vehicles. We were buddies before we got into cars. In an ideal world wouldn't it be cool to have a buddy with the same car? Most of my 'car-guy' friends are my friends because we tackle the hobby in the same way and place value on the same areas of our vehicles...but t the end of the day it would be awesome to say/ "Look man these PBM LCAs aren't doing it for me. You wanna try them out? I'll rock your Cusco ones." You can wrench on each other's cars together even if you have different cars but (240 owners can attest) that working on two of the same cars makes everything faster. You 'learn' on one, and then tackle the other. Pure bromance. Quote:

I really think there are cool guys and douches in every scene. We just had a meet in the 626 area with twins, mustangs, 370s, a couple 240s, and a couple Hondas... Awesome group. We all talked about each others cars, joked, had a great time. Then a bunch of us went on a canyon run, got to the top and there was a big douche group talking crap on every one of our cars. Why? Haha
|
That's where small fb groups are better. Weed out the keyboard drifters and we're left with 50 or so guys that all care a similar interest and can all contribute and appreciate what is being posted.
There's no hate in there. Because the people that deserve that hate never get in. |

Yea its totally different for girls than it is for guys and I 100% agree with you. I also noticed it as well when I was dressed up for work (I was wearing black slacks and my light blue dress shirt) There is a completely different demeanor about guys who approached me. When they did of course. My boyfriend also doesn't like going to meets as much. He thinks I check out other people. >:/ Which I do. Lol Other than that I search for uniquely done cars and the products they use. haha |

The sad fact is that people fake it because we live in a generation where we don't want to call anyone on their bullshit. I'm not saying to go out and verbally attack people minding their own business but when they shoot off their big mouths and it's abundantly clear that they're lying then SAY SOMETHING. I HATE seeing Fatlace stickers on OEM cars. I hate seeing Japanese street club/team stickers on poorly put together cars. Both entities have a certain reputation and unless you're emulating them then why are you slapping their stickers on your shit? Because you're too lazy to get to a point where even those entities would recognize you? Should a bone-stock Honda Accord with smoked-out tail lights and underglow have a Mugen banner on the front windshield? Should a Nissan Altima with 19" chrome rims have an eBay NISMO badge on it's trunk? The answer is no...but over the internet anything can be bought and in today's society you can do whatever you want because hurting feelings isn't permitted. If I put a Risky Devil banner on my car (obviously not affiliated) I wouldn't be surprised by person who called me out. Kids (in CA especially) are allowed to fake everything they do. |
A new and hot (sexy) and cheap sport car is going to draw all sorts of people. It's accessible to young enthusiasts who are willing to spend all their coin. It's a decent car for people who want to DD a sport car who hold down a regular job. It's a car that teens can beg their parents to buy for them, and soon these cars will be flooding the second hand market where you'll see tons of hoonigans snapping them up and slamming them to the ground on cut springs with 20" chromed wheels and limo tinted windows.
Notice, in the above paragraph I could be speaking about any modern sports car, not just the BRZ. If you're just interested in the crowd, either make specific friend withing THIS community and have meets with them or buy a car that will attract specific mature enthusiasts. Lotus Elise/Exige community if you want a modern car. This is less accessible, and the car is really niche, so it attracts only people who specifically LOVE that car for DD and or track use. The Mazda Miata community, because no hoon or 'teenage boy' (I'm speaking of mentality here, not age) will be seen even dead in the driver seat of that car. There are probably really great communities surrounding some vintage sports cars like TR6, MGB/A, etc. etc. |
Most twins in my area are completely stock. I've seen 15-20 so far and only one has had mods and another drove like a jackass.

I got a great community in my area, it's me, myself and I... :)

In my area? Awesome.
As a whole in general? Pffff. Mixed bag |

I give the "86 wave" to other owners when I see them driving. Otherwise I gave up on car meets. Too much hate and I have better things to do with my time then spend it answering dumb questions about my car

If you end up in Northern FL you'll still be fucked. I just came from there. Where are you now? |
The San Diego community is pretty kick ass. If you haven't found community yet, you aren't trying. I've only seen you at the carlsbad C&C ONCE. You should show up more. We tend to have a little older crowd of car enthusiest, which I really like. You have @DriftEm and @whataboutbob. Who else do you need other than Hooman and Bob? That right there is enough for me. Hooman is a character to say the least and Bob has a TON of knowledge about the platform. There is also Eric, Mark, Maximillian…tons of regular autox guys. The cool part about them is that they keep coming back! It's consistent. You get to know these guys and they become friends REALLY quickly.
As far as the comparison between the two communities, you are talking about a cult classic, vs a future cult classic (this in itself is somewhat debateable as the 86 crowd has pretty much made it a "cult classic" already). The 86 is a new platform. You can't expect it to reach epic status yet. Give it time. Gonna suck if you give up on the car now and realize 5 years out that the community has grown quite a bit, the 86 has been discontinued (crossing fingers selfishly) and you are back in the past chasing "what was" I always tease my BMW buddy because he says the M3 is the king of the track. I agree with him completely, but I do warn him that in a couple years, the 86 (modded ones, of course) might be giving the M3 run for their reign ;) |

I'm not really trying to be a part of the local community. That was the stance I sort of adopted in my first post. To put it in very simple, maybe 'harsh' terms: the guys local to here are more interested in bro-ing out and buying cans of dupli-color for their wheels. I don't think I've met you and not everyone fits this blanket statement so please don't take offense. I know how it makes me sound. I know that it makes me out to be a snob. I say these things here because I would never call someone out to their face or make a scene. It's not cool.but the fact is I simply can't relate to guys that rock drift stickers without drifting, you know? Just people who say they do something when they don't. I don't slide enough to warrant the look or the label so why would I try to convey it? It's probably more of a CA thing because we live in the land of lifestyle brands...and this swaggotry is leaking over into the car community. Getting together with friends is awesome. If you've found some guys you like being around and they're cool then that's a win for you and them. My ideal community would be one that does less sitting around at meets and more aggressive driving. It's a childhood dream I've yet to realize and one of the few I think is doable. Someday. |

To say it in "simple, maybe 'harsh' terms" you sounds like a whiney brat who complains but won't do anything about it. SHUT UP AND GET INVOLVED! Come out and prove me wrong. I'll be in Carlsbad this saturday. You can hit me if you want to ;) Some of the "community bros" that show up. your local community http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h8...pszhjyv3ow.jpg Autox supercharged, supercharged, supercharged……yes please. (Hooman, Eric, Bob from front to back) http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h8...ps7n1rblfz.jpg The 86 doin' work http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h8...ps7c03hzwh.jpg |
Hey dizzario, if you can come out to Qualcomm Stadium this Saturday and Sunday for the autocross. There will be a few of us out there doing what these cars are designed to do, no show here, all go (ok I got headlights and taillight that cost me $1000 and give me absolutely no performance gain:) ) the whole autocross community is great, you might like this crowd. My car would be the white one with number 979 :)

Autocross, Cars n Coffee, or this https://www.facebook.com/86DDA, in each case you'll find some of the best people in the twins community.

I have a 12hr day watch Fri-Sat. Another member told me about the Qualcomm Autocross. How is it? Is it once a month typically? Will you be taking videos? The way my suspension is set up right now isn't suited for those turns...but it's probably only an hour's worth of adjustments to get it there. Quote:
@suaveflooder - there's a difference between whiney brat and disgruntled manchild lol. Like I said I know how it sounds. |
In my area some people are taking it too seriously. Talking about stuff you would see in the Godfather movie series. I miss the days where you sit back and enjoy a thing you love. Not getting pushed into it

Here's some autox videos if you want to check them out, not all of them are from the Q, some are from the LA region as well. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD-...a_6_W3GkCrulhQ Just found this one that I hadn't seen before, very nice: [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJqVcsLoTCw"]Robert Stangarone - KFR Turbo Sprite Run at SCCA Pro Solo Saturday 4/12/14 - YouTube[/ame] |
I've meet a couple other enthusiast owners in the area, but the vast majority that I see on the road seem to be a bunch of swag yolo kids that finally upgraded from beat up 240's.

I painted my own rims in San Diego... That makes me a poser..? Or worse a bro..? :( they aren't done but look nice enough till they get them powder coated. With that said the FRS scene as a whole is following every other car scene that comes from inexpensive new good looking Japanese sports cars. There's always gonna be the people who chop the springs and ghetto paint the wheels with any car the only reason that it flourishes in this community is how accessible this car is. Were you perfect when you first modified your first S chassis? Time, money, knowledge those are the things you need to build a sick car most people only have two when you are new you might not have any. Live and learn. Besides those stance dudes screw them and their stupid unsafe camber.

This is awesome. I feel like (in CA at least) it's viewed as competition...a 'need' to stand out. Just be you and enjoy it. Don't rush it and do a hack job. I fully realize my hypocrisy because for the most part I try to live with a "don't fucking worry about other people" attitude and when you see me in person I'm not gonna start spewing my bullshit all over you. I'm only talking here because this is a forum and that's what it's for. Someone on here said it best: people keep making the FRS just another Scion. |

Right now Im stationed in oklahoma. Currently deployed. 4 more weeks though! |
I rarely see any other owners on the road and haven't been to a meet so I dunno. I see maybe 1 per week at best. And usually stock.
The one modified car I seen was a hellaflush kid with stickers all over, bouncing on bumps and swerving but maybe he was avoiding pot holes? I wasn't in my BRZ so I'm sure he didn't notice me lol |

Dude if you hate humidity you will NOT want to go to FL. My cousin is on that base. That's the AFSOC one. I used to drive 45min North from Pensacola to see him on the weekends. The Gulf Coast is awesome if you like tropical beaches and storms but as far as the car scene goes it's next to nothing in the Northern areas. You would have to head to Southern FL to see any action. I'd actually go back to FL, though. I think my time in CA is near a close. I can't stand this lifestyle after being in the South...I'd go back to a different station in FL if I could. |

@dizzario everyone has already said it, but we have a great group here. I don't have money or the knowledge for performance mods yet, so this year is just getting my car to look how I want it to look. I enjoy canyon runs and have done quite a few :D I'm hoping to play around with autocross a bit while my car is stock so I can learn what I like and build accordingly. In the interim, I'm an information sponge and learning all I can from these awesome folks, building friendships, and enjoying our little slice of 86 paradise.
I hope you don't give up on us here! Hope to see you around :) |

Any community for cars that young men can afford will be rife with "yolo bros", always been the case and always will be the case.
I've seen it so many times back when huge meets were popular, every group is full of young men trying to be cool and spending every last cent of their Starbucks income on whatever used parts show up on the forum. Civics, Cobalts, Integras, Fox Mustangs, Proteges, etc. Hell, I was one of them back in the day when a painted engine cover was a "mod". |
