How do diesel engines control timing?

I understand how gas engines control timing, but seeing how diesels do not have spark plugs how do they ensure that when they modify their engines they do not knock?

The fuel is only injected when its the right time for combustion.

The amount of air/fuel in the cylinder will change at what point in the compression stroke that they combust.
