A/C question

So I've noticed when I have the A/C off that I only get cold air out of the vents when it's on the windshield defogger.

Any other setting with the A/C off blows hot air out the vents. So is it running the A/C compressor on that setting?

Yes, running on "windshield defog" turns on the AC compressor, even if you have the AC turned off. Has worked this way on all my cars (ones that had AC anyway). AC dehumidifies the air and gets rid of the moisture on the inside of the glass.

Wait, I always leave mine dialed to windshield, but with everything else off. Are you saying that it's still running the compressor even if the everything is in the off positions? I usually leave it on windshield so the vents aren't blowing their hot air at me, but if it's running the compressor pointlessly I'll suffer the vents.

The defrost setting is different than the windshield position... Defrost turns AC On, while windishield position should not...

Watch your compressor. Compressor clutch cuts in on both those windshield settings...the one with just the windshield AND the one that includes the heat setting.

Think it does that so that you get defogging anytime you have air directed on the windshield.

It'll for sure run the AC if you have the switch to windshield or windshield and feet. But only if you have the fan turned on. When it's foggy for me, I normally just put it one click before the feet and windshield if I don't want the AC go on, and it works OK.
