Home air tools?
Someone gifted me a craftsman 26 gal air compressor with a air ratchet and 1/2" impact gun.
I tested the 1/2" on an old control arm I had a stuck end link on. Didn't work. I couldn't fit my vice grip on it but I could fit a pair of channel locks on and use the impact at same time and nothing. So I googled it up and I see a significant amount of reviews that the Craftsman 1/2" can't even get their 100 ft/lb lug nuts off... I set the pressure for the impact at 90 psi, max on the 26 gal compressor is 150. So, should I increase the pressure or buy a better 1/2" impact? Or is it that rusted on? Or please provide other opinions. |
I have a 1/2" Craftsman electric impact that handles our 89 ft/lb lug nuts with ease.
According to the web page it's rated for 200 ft/lb so I would expect an air gun to be able to go much higher. Pump it up! |

If you're looking to replace the impact gun, then between Lowe's and Home Depot you can usually find a package deal on their store brand air tools (Kobalt, at Lowe's). That way you can get four or five tools and various bits and whatnot at one time.

I'm not really looking for a "deal" more for a tool that is going to work. But at the same time don't want to spend a fortune. I guess best bang for buck.
Maybe I'm just not using enough PSI but I don't know what the toll is rated for or supposed to use so I don't want to just turn it up to 150... |

Crank it up to max, tell your friend to hold your beer, and see what happens.

Pneumatics are very sensitive to restrictions and most of those compressors don't have a large enough regulator. If you can, put a gauge on the line just before it goes into the air gun and check what the pressure is there when you're using your gun. Otherwise, just go get a 5/8" filter/regulator/lubricator, and whatever fittings you'll need. Also make sure you have a decent sized hose.
That craftsman impact gun is going to be another issue though. I've had an Ingersol Rand 2135TI for over a decade. It was worth each and every penny. Like His Majesty, I got mine at sears. |

I have a 300ft/lb impact wrench from DeWalt. It's great! Works like a charm.
