A little scare I got from Toyota Canada's site.

Something I came across cruising Toyota Canada's website...

http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObje...?v180016e.html

Read carefully and then pray that this is old and inaccurate information.

6 speed AUTOMATIC!

There is no doubt about it that this car will come with an Automatic option. Every other "Sports" car in this segment does and for Toyota not to include one is pretty much suicide for sales. If anything be glad we're getting a 6-Speed Automatic(Probably by Aisin) rather then the 4 Speed Auto on Subarus like the Subaru Impreza GT or even the dreaded CVT Subaru option.

But they're promoting it like it's a good thing...

You got to remember it's still Toyota and they are now only changing their Corporate Image from one of Fuel Efficient Appliances to a cutting edge fun but efficient car. Automatics in this day and age drive sales. There is no getting around that. Stick a car with a manual only option and you'll only see it tiny spurts but give it an auto option and it'll sell like hotcakes.

"environmental performance" is the part of the copy that you're not seeing that clearly. Six speed autos definitely say "look I'm more efficient then the old 4 Speed Autos of last year". Although I think I would rather prefer an Automated Manual or Dual Clutch but beggars can't be choosers.

But it also demonstrates that they may not be making the sport-focused car that a lot of people are expecting. It could very well be nothing more than a RWD Celica replacement to sell to the fashion conscious...

It's a bit of a bait and switch, using the '86' number in the concept, something that evokes raw, minimalist performance, then turning around and promoting a 6 speed auto with it. Just demonstrates to me that there may be more of a committee design to this car. Which would be bad.

Pretty sure 6 speed manual was already confirmed.
And yes this will probably come with a auto version but most people here wont buy it anyways. So who cares.

You know, if they built a twin-clutch they would only have to build one transmission instead of two, and that would be an excellent compromise. Hint, hint, Toyota...

Exactly! Why have auto option is bad thing? More car out there on the street = more after market parts company will make parts for this car... but again, that comes w an equal opposing reaction (just like Newton's Law 3) more POS ricer gonna be out on the street. :bellyroll:

i'd prefer an H-pattern.

My concern isn't so much that there will be an auto. But the fact that it is important to the marketing of the car. They didn't say "close-ratio 6 speed!" which targets performance drivers. They focused on the automatic, which could indicate that the engineers' influence on the car is being 'softened' by marketing douchebags that are now dictating changes to give the car a broader appeal. This could be a disaster...
