Modding an Automatic

Just wondering if it's worth it to mod an automatic frs I have a mt but my cousin just bought an auto and he's deciding if he should or shouldn't. ( Coilovers, exhaust, etc ) I told him to go for it. Do you guys think it's worth it?

If he's going to keep it and enjoy it I don't see why not.

If there's a chance he'll trade it in soon for some reason (get an MT, different car, etc.) I'd hold off, you'll never get your money back and unbolting everything and returning to stock to sell is a pain.

The bigger question is what are his goals? Autocross? Hanging out in parking lots? Sunday drives?

Agreed i recently put my car back to stock and it was a pain. I know he's going to keep it for a few years he has no plans on trading it in soon and for goals mostly for hanging in the parking lot and sunday drives.

I mean why wouldn't it be. The car is the car, regardless. The automatic may be a little slower off the line, but the guts of the car are basically the same. So if improving the handling has nothing to do with the trans imo. I say go for it. Then again, I hate traffic so I drive auto.

Yeah I drove his car and i actually like the auto transmission and I agree why not it's his car.

Yeah modding shouldn't matter if he has an AT or MT at all. If you traded your MT it would be the same hassle to de-mod as it would be to de-mod an AT. Transmission makes ZERO difference for Coilovers, Exhaust, Body Kits, Wheels, ext.

I have the AT and drive in manual mode most of the time, I love it and just did my first track day 3 weeks ago, was a blast. The only hard part is deciding on which coilovers to go with. I just need to pick one and bite the bullet ha :P

I have an automatic and have been in manuals also. They are both really fun cars. I think they are both worth modding. I would consider a tune and then rims and tires, coil overs to be some of the first mods. The automatic isn't that fast off the line but once I get going it keeps going. Also, if he is considering forced induction it would really help the power. I have been in an AT with a supercharger making 170ish TQ and 220 or so hp. it was really cool. Not sure what his budget is, but usually that effects the amount of horsepower one can produce.

I also drive an automatic, and I would definitley mod it. This car was made to be modded, no matter what type of transmission.

Don't see how it would make a difference as long as he kept the stock parts.

Covo_86 06-05-2014 12:49 AM

Show him what you guys said and i think i convinced him haha

I own an automatic, enjoy it everyday, and always drive manual. I love manual paddle shifts on an auto because I obsessed with super car and most of those cars are automatic with paddle shifts. It doesn't make a big difference between the two. Well, if he wants to go fi then it's better to have an manual.
