Unknown Engine Rattling (Video)
This happened only once before about 700 miles ago so this is only the second time this has happened. 14000 miles on the car. I only could hear it when I applied throttle. I pulled over after 10 minutes or so of hearing the sound and shut my car off and let it sit for about 5 minutes. once i turned it back on the noise was gone. I've never heard anything like this before so if anyone has experienced this before and has some insight please share and enlighten me :)

Very hard to hear, you are right in that VVT/Cam angle change spot between 3000-4000 RPM. Depending on the tuner it could just be that cam angle switch.
Listen at the 3:12 mark is this the same rattle you hear after I go into 4th? [ame]http://youtu.be/wGcv6SKj858?t=3m16s[/ame] |
Did you check to see if there were pliars in your engine?
Seemed to be a common occurance. |

Actually, yes it does sound suspiciously similar. The thing that gets me is that it was occurring through the entire RPM band, and once I turned my car off and then turned it back on it was nonexistent. There was not even a hint of it. If I had a stereo mic instead of my phone to capture it better it would be very obvious even below 3000 rpm.
My tune is from shiv using the open flash tablet. I'm following your thread regarding the valvetrain noise that's occurring in some cars and I find it interesting that some cars have this valvetrain noise while others don't. for the longest time around 4K there was definitely a shift in engine note were it sounded much more aggressive but still no valvetrain rattle. |
I barely cannot hear anything. like Dezoris mentioned, it sounds normal?

I have heard that exact same rattle on 2 occasions several thousand miles between happening; and both times it went away completely before happening again.
Now, I know you don't want to hear this, but it happened again one more time except it didn't go away that time. The result was I towed the car to the dealer, and they ended up having to order me a new short block as the motor had failed. I'm still waiting for them to get my new engine working properly so I can get my car back. I sincerely hope your rattling is an unrelated cause, and that your motor is fine, but I had to share the info either way. If you get it resolved, please share. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I've had this same rattle on 2 occasions as well, happened a couple months ago, both times after driving on a 200 mile trip. I figured the car was tired or something, let it rest and it wasn't there the next day and hasn't happened since.

That's pretty concerning to hear but better me knowing than not.
Was anyone here completely stock? Tune ? Exhaust? Pulley? Anything? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Does anyone think his timing is off? ECU problem?

Interesting. Those mods are really minimal.
@AVodka14 is that possible? Even with stock tune? If so I wonder how that could even happen. I'm not educated enough on this stuff to know. I'm heading to the dealer for my 15000 mile service and I'm going to inform them about this. And I might share your story with them as well @Mr 286 I'll report back with whatever they have to say. They'll probably say "Cool story bro" or something to that effect anyway.
The most I'd expect from them is to keep an eye out for metal fragments in your oil. You may even want to talk to them about investing in a good magnetic drain plug. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
