Computer Headphones?

First off I'm no audiophile so I don't need the latest cutting edge technology million dollar headphones.

I have been using Sennheiser HD 212Pro for the last 5-10 years, long enough I can't even remember. Anyway last week the left ear doesn't work unless I hold the plug in HARD. So I need replacements.

These were like $40 when I bought them years ago and I am satisfied with their performance so I'm looking for a similar product in todays money. Not sure what that is but less than $100 for sure.

Please tell me what to get :thanks:

I use both of these:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Creative-EF0060-Aurvana-Live-Headphones/dp/B000ZJZ7OA/"]Amazon.com: Creative Aurvana Live! Headphones: Electronics[/ame]
Basically a rebranded, much lower cost version of cans with drivers Denon used in a great set.

Order these first. They take a bit of getting used to, fit-wise. But holy crap they punch way above their price range when it comes to sound quality. If you don't like them, well, they're cheap. Toss them.

+1 on Koss, if you need small portable ones, they don't look too cool, but they function. I love them for running/gym. I bought 2 pairs just because!

No comment on the big cans if you are looking for that.

Do you need a mic?

I was guessing no since the side that "died" didn't have one. But if he does, there's always the AntLion ModMic.

Also, if the left driver died it's probably the wiring. If you wanted a project, I'm betting they could be recabled and good as new.

If you want portable, the Vsonic GR06 is amazing. Some of the best sound quality I've had from an IEM.

If you want over-the-ear, I'm looking to sell my Razer Chimaeras. They're wireless, can take either optical or HDMI input, incredible sound, and a mic. And they look cool. Because you can't just slouch around and not look cool. I was looking to sell them for $150 (they're $200 headphones), but you can have them for $100.

cant go wrong with sennheiser.

fatoni 06-04-2014 01:08 PM

what qualities do you want in headphones?

for under $100 you should be on the lookout for some refurbished ath m-50 but if you cant find them refurbished or dont want to stretch your budget the sony mdr v6 or mdr 7506 is probably one of your best bets. i really recommend you step it up a bit and get something like the beyerdynamic dt 880. i picked mine up for about $180 and they are glorious.

Under $100 the best would be Sony MDR-V6/7506. Used professionally for recording in studios.

I tend to go for higher end/fancy $400+ types however, current one is Bower Wilkins. They still only last me a few years.

Something that hasn't really been mentioned is that it's all going to be personal taste. A lot of people recommend high dollar headphones but what they don't tell you is that they have a high impedance, so you'll need an amp to make them sound optimal on top of that if your soundcard doesn't have a dedicated headphone amp. And then others say "get these because they're what are used in studios" but what they don't tell you there is that the EQ for a monitor-type headphone is optimally flat. Some people like this, some don't. Do you want tons of bass? There's a Sony model that will make you happy. Do you want a warm sound? Stick with Sennheiser. Want to waste a bunch of money on a name and marketing? Buy Beats.

yea, there are so many choices, maybe I will get these they seem to be the successor to what I have now

or this at twice the price

Also reading about the sony ones posted above

I'll throw in my vote for the Sony MDR-V6 as well. Good headphones, reasonable price.

having a higher impedance is only going to make the noise to signal ratio better. anything under 250 ohm is going to be fine although you will probably need to throw more volume at it. i believe that you should get the fullest range and flattest response you can afford. let an eq do the eqing and let the speakers represent the signal that gets input. all that said, i dont think anything is going to get close to beating the ath m50 for anywhere near its price point.

Ditto on the ATH M-50. I produce, and these are well regarded in the audio world.

Of course there are better headphones out there; but M50 is the best bang for the buck and most accurate to true life/audio/signal for the buck.

I had 7506 too in the past. Good headphones for listening and a classic pair; but still nowhere as accurate/real/flat as the M50. Still a good decent pair though and perfect if you're not really producing/monitoring and just using to listen.
