17" replacement tyre options
 

My stock tyres are almost gone.

What replacement 215/45/17 tyres have you guys tried?

Looking for something with good handling characteristics, but not super grippy.

I was thinking of possibly Kumho Ku31, or Bridgestone Adrenalins RE002?

I went with pilot sport 3's. Quite a bit better in the dry getting rid of the sloppiness of the standard tyres on the limit but still easy to throw the car around. On a different planet in the wet, massive grip and still great communication and gradual breakaway. Also absolutely dirt cheap, best value tyre I've ever purchased.

I think they sell them at costco too. How much did you get them for? Can you still slide them around in the dry or are they too grippy?

Yes the biggest problem with my stock tyres now is the wet grip. The tyres have been overheated too many times and the wet grip is all gone. There's a massive difference between dry and wet grip which makes it super dangerous on a mountain road with wet corners...

Yeah, no problem still sliding it about if you provoke the rear end. The dry grip is better but they're certainly not an AD08 or the like in the dry. Wet grip is fantastic, not dissimilar to the dry grip of the standard tyres.

I paid $178 a corner and got a $100 fuel card so in effect $150 a tyre, it's the cheapest tyre I can ever remember buying.

That's an awesome price! :) I always thought they cost more than that!

Need to check if they are made in the same country and not some dodgy compound from Vietnam/Thailand..

That's interesting because the Michelin Primacy HP (the standard tire) is listed on the Michelin website as a higher performance & more expensive tire, compared to the Pilot Sport 3.

Depending on your budget there are many choices you can go for. Since you mentioned KU31....I've tried stock, PZero Rosso, KU31 and KU39 on this car, and the KU39 is my favorite so far. It's quiet, comfy, handles well and yet not too grippy. I'm still able to slide the tail out nicely at roundabouts even in the dry (at night when nobody's around ;)). Bloody cheap too.

PS3 is a Max Performance tyre. Primacy HP will be at best a Ultra High Performance category tyre. The PS3 will definitely be a better sports tyre, but may wear out a lot faster. I have no idea why the Primacy HP are so expensive and who would actually pay for them..

I love how cheap the tyres are in this size. So much to choose from. You must do a lot of driving to go through so many tyres already? How many KMs did those tyres last?

I'm also looking at the Pirelli Cinturato P1 and Dunlop Direzza DZ102.. The PS3s are definitely the best performance for buck, but I'm a bit worried I may go through them really quickly as I like to drift at track days.

Yea 18" tyres generally doesn't cost much more than 17" tyres, and provides better grip due to their larger ground contact patch. The PZero's were 17", but when I upgraded to 18" I went for the KU31. Maybe just my luck but for some reason the set I had didn't balance well (had constant vibration even after several attempts at balancing). Then when one tyre had a nail in it too large to patch, I thought stuff that and bought a new set of KU39. Immediately after fitting the KU39 the improvement was noticeable. I really like this tyre so much now that I'm thinking of fitting the same tyres on my wife's car as well since it's due for a change soon :thumbsup:

Also reckon the RE002's will probably have too much grip compared to say the HP Primacy although I have not tried anything else on this car yet.
