How modified is your FR-S/BRZ/GT86?

I've been curious about this for a while.

The ratio of stock cars to modified ones.

I've seen some really beautiful modified twins on the forum, but not all of them are to my taste. It's completely subjective, and it makes me wonder where the majority of these little cars will be in twenty years. About the time I start getting all revved up about aftermarket wheels and tails, a ruined Civic will pass me on the freeway with it's body kit flapping in the wind and I instantly appreciate my car again just the way it is. I'm sure that most of us fall somewhere between bone stock and Rocket Bunny. My own car is so lightly modified that I doubt anyone would even notice. I suspect that a bone stock Twin will be a rare sight in twenty years, especially after they've changed hands a few times and lost some value.

Anyway. Thats it. I was just curious to see the numbers...

lastexile1987 05-28-2014 11:14 AM

Mine has some minor mods to it. Injen intake, tein s-tech springs and invidia N1 cat back. I plan on doing some exterior mods like a tasteful wing and a glossy black vinyl on the roof, but that is all in the future.

I voted light cosmetic and performance.

I have:
axle back
lowering springs
LCAs
rims/tires

Some of my friends who aren't into cars think I've done a lot to it.

RoadKillGrill 05-28-2014 11:28 AM

Grimspeed front plate (does this even count?)

Seat covers for the back seat.

I'm WILD!!

byakko 05-28-2014 11:34 AM

This could qualify as substantial I think. Certainly isn't close to stock anymore

Optimus Prime 05-28-2014 12:20 PM

Lightly modded consisting of:

Sharkfin
Convex Mirror from group buy(shipped yesterday!)
BRZ Auto dimming mirror (does that even count?)
OFT
TRD Drop in and CBE
TRD Sway Set
Rally Armors
GS STB

Nothing major, but now that I list it out, it's more than I thought. Only remaining things will eventually be a catted header and POSSIBLY OP/FP. I'm in the minority that doesn't mind the stock rims.

Performance:
OFT
shifter/trans/diff bushings
MTEC springs

tennisfreak 05-28-2014 12:49 PM

I did not buy this car to keep bone stock. If I wanted bone stock I would have spent more money on a more expensive sports car (used cayman s to be exact).

I bought mine specifically to modify.

Right now I am "Light cosmetic and performance modification" but will eventually be "Substantial cosmetic and performance modification" after I lower the car, either force induce or full exhaust and tune the car.

Just playing the waiting game to see the aftermarket and tuning game mature a little since I am in no rush.

I was in a rush for a while but since then bought a Gixxer 600 and now dont feel compelled to rush into performance mods on my car.

husker741 05-28-2014 01:14 PM

I got plasti dip on da remz, vinyl wrap on da hood, roof, and trunk, a stripe down da middle, tons of stickerz all around, cut springs, and Agency Power headers with a Airaid intake that are helped by an FA20Club flex fuel tune.

So it's pretty close to being too modified to drive on da skreetz, yo.

tahdizzle 05-28-2014 01:17 PM

My car is so modified, I have to leave it in the garage. If i drive it in broad daylight, asian girls in bikini's automatically flock for photo-shoots.

tmcmullins 05-28-2014 01:33 PM

Stock. I figured that would be an original idea. According to the poll, I was right!

Need proof (a.k.a. vids or pics)... else, I am calling BS! :bellyroll:

BrianFRS 05-28-2014 01:46 PM

Stock, till I can save for some wheels and a lip kit. Then probably exhaust and coilovers, but after my lease is up.

NIN69 05-28-2014 02:05 PM

External mods for now. I won't touch the mechanical until my two year warranty is finished.

8R6 05-28-2014 06:04 PM

just a lil

Awesome. I haven't dyno'd it, nor do I plan to, but with the header I can no longer feel the torque dip. That's the main reason I got it in the first place. The car now has a smooth power band and no more of that turbo lag feeling.

Do you know if ft86speedfactory has custom el headers?

Don't believe so. There are a ton of EL header options out there so I don't see them making a set of their own.

monkie 05-28-2014 11:21 PM

I went with Substantial cosmetic modification, hope it was correct :bonk:

Cosmetic

APR Carbon fibre front lip
APR Carbon fibre Side Rocker Extensions

Perrin 2.5" Catback Exhaust

Thats all I can think off the top of my head most likely forgot things

Quentin 05-28-2014 11:46 PM

My FR-S isn't here yet, but I already know what I'm going to do mod wise.

TRD exhaust - sound and aesthetics (maybe performance... that is debatable)
TRD air filter - performance (minor)
TRD sway bar set - performance (minor)
Prodrive GT1 wheels - aesthetics (performance is a wash, IMO)
Summer tires - aesthetics and performance (more grip, but likely worse accel due to weight)

If I buy out my company lease, I might do some more permanent things like the Cusco steering wheel and TRD ducktail rear spoiler.

Mister 05-29-2014 10:30 AM

Light cosmetics, the $$ is starting to pile up but if someone who was not a twin owner were to sit in my car, I doubt they would notice it is not stock:

Heated Seats
Heated Seat Plaque by YoSpeed
JDM red stitched knee pads
JDM red stitched speaker panels
JPM red stitched leather gauge hood
TRD Shift knob
JDM red stitched e-brake boot
BRZ Trunk Liner
BRZ Spoiler
BRZ Auto-dimming mirror
MLV/GTMAT sound deadening in the trunk (floor pan coming soon)
Perrin Inlet Hose (sound tube delete)

Once I finish sound deadening in the floor pan I am going to be doing more performance modifications, with the goal of 190-200whp at OEM or near OEM sound levels.

I had a friend of mine in the car the other day and they commented what a nice interior the car has, mission accomplished! I would not mind getting a 2014 touchscreen HU just because I hate the looks of the stock radio, but still waiting until good deals/better prices on this show up.

Dream20b 05-29-2014 11:07 AM

bone stock atm.

How exactly did you go about installing these if you dont mind me asking. Did you use the stock seat heaters from the BRZ or Monogram FRS?

I posted this somewhere else as well. I should really post a DIY or something for it with more detailed information. I did not use the BRZ/Monogram parts as they were absurdly expensive. I did it for <$100. This is a response I had to someone else a last month...

Np. I meant to do a write up, but when I was doing it my phone was dead so no pictures.
I used this kit:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B1DCKL2/
It comes with heating pads, switches, and regulators.

I took the seats out of the car and pulled up the upholstery on it just enough to slide these underneath. The fabric is just held on by plastic clips and metal rings. You can use special tools for the metal rings or you can just yank them out and replace with zip-ties on reassembly.

I took apart the center console (there are a couple DIY for this on the forum) and tapped the 12v supply that goes to the Aux port. I used regular wire tapping hardware from the store, no wire stripping involved, and wrapped it up good and tight with electric tape.
Run the wiring under the carpet while the seats are still out and re-install.

The passenger seat has a air bag sensor which will be triggered by the heating pad, it does not matter if you put it above or below the sensor. You can either get the warning light/sound disabled, leave the pad out, or find a good way to insulate it from the capacitive sensor. I have found in my research that a Teflon fabric should be good enough to isolate the sensor from the heating pad, but have not had a chance to try it yet.

I installed the switches in the OEM location. With my great foresight I saw I would never cut nice neat holes so I bought one of the BRZ Limited Center Console plaques by YoSpeed. The switch is a bit bigger then OEM so it slid right on top of the template and looks perfect. I plan to post some pictures in the next couple of weeks.

DarkSunrise 05-29-2014 11:24 AM

Mine is lightly modded at the moment, mostly for the track.

Current mods:
- 17x8 TSW Nurburgring
- 215/45/17 Sumitomo HTR ZIII
- Stoptech SP pads
- ATE Type 200 brake fluid
- Perrin CBE

Next step in mods will be similar, just upgraded a bit.

Next mods:
- 235/40/17 Nitto NT05
- Hawk HP+ pads
- Whiteline camber bolts
- Whiteline differential inserts
- FT86SF catted UEL header
- Nameless OP/DP combo
- custom tune

And after that, I'll be looking to substantially increase performance.

More mods:
- 245/40/17 Hankook RS3
- 17x9 Enkei RPF1
- RCE T0 coilovers
- Carbotech XP10 pads
- JR Supercharger
- Exedy stage 1 clutch + flywheel

cwb48 05-29-2014 11:42 AM

I voted bone stock, but I actually have two mods- plugged the soundtube and bought the $50 trunk lid liner.

Mikem53 05-29-2014 11:52 AM

Two mods ... I'm done.
Nameless axleback exhaust. So it sounds as good as it looks.
Rexpeed convex side mirrors. To ease the blind spots

Annahra 05-29-2014 11:57 AM

Does it count as a mod if it was an option on some cars but you added it later? I'm always curious about this when I see some build threads.

Dustin 05-29-2014 08:59 PM

I think mine counts as substantial performance

Innovate Supercharged with 70mm pulley
Nameless intake tube
Nameless header, 3" op/fp, and 3" exhaust
Tomei 2 way
4.56 ring and pinion
Aluminum carrier bushings
ACT clutch & flywheel
Full Blown radiator and fan shroud with SPAL fans
