Power Improvement on the BRZ

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum.

I got my BRZ last week with about 6000km on the clock.
Loving it so far. Especially the sound during cold start-up. I dont think my neighbours are quite keen on that though :D.

Anyways, since I am new to the car having up/down graded from a Honda Accord I would like to know what I can do to the car locally to get just a little bit more power without FI. I will be looking into that after warranty expires.

Subaru claims that their exhaust bumps the power to 155kw but I would like to get just a little bit more out of it.

Any suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Good choice:w00t: The appreciation for your car will grow day by day.

With regards to increases in power - The cheapest/'value for money' would be a drop in filter.

I understand your feeling of that cold start. Its refreshing.

A full cold air intake would be awesome!!

With regards to going local:
1. Drop in filters go for approx R1000. (Locally)
- CPi tuning in Edanvale quoted me around R1000 for this.
- Toyota dealerships have a TRD filter for R1559. Not sure about Subaru.
- RGM has it for R1140

To import, these cost between $40 to $50. including brands such as HKS, Perrin, K&N etc. (Installation is childs play)

2. Cold air inductions go for approx R6000(Locally)
- RGM does a K&N typhoon induction system(Bolt-in cold air intake) for R6860 (Incl installation)
- CPi tuning did not give me a price on this(Assuming they dont do this).

To import a Cold air intake kit, it costs between $300 to $350, including brands such as HKS, Perrin, K&N typhoon kits etc

I do not have information from other tuners locally, such as RMS.

I think importing is the way to go.

If anyone is keen on importing cold air intakes, Im keen and would be willing to share import costs. Im sure theres many of us here who would like to do the same.

Afe/Greddy Takeda Momentum intake sounds awesome but to be honest, you're chasing ponies rather than horses when it comes to N/A engines. ZAR/HP ratio is very high...

BTW. Welcome and congrats!!

Thanks a lot. Ill start of with the air filter from TRD/RGM and ill check if Subaru has one.

Later on I shall go with an induction upgrade and chip tuning to take advantage of all these changes that have been done.

I'm looking for about 160 odd kw @ the flywheel.

DSport magazine has done dyno tests on most of the major intake systems for the FR-S. I don't think the TRD drop in filter gave much if any gains while some intakes actually lost power, so best to do some research.

Also look at the way they make power rather than the top end gains.

If you want more punch without a tune, exhaust and intake won't do much except for the placebo effect.
Crawford power blocks get a good bump in hp & an E85 tune does too.
Past that, you'll have to shell out FI money.

sav 05-29-2014 05:08 AM

Yep, plus our fuel is pretty bad and E85 is not really an option. Normally aspirated horses are not cheap and never will be.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

I have installed the Subaru BRZ exhaust (R6300 incl installation), it sounds really good but to be honest I don't know if you are going to feel the difference of 5 fwkw. Although the sounds makes it feel like 50 kw :bonk:.

Takeda FTW!!

Blitz made a little bit more but I prefer the Takeda's OEM look. Some of those drop in filters, can't remember which ones are basically just a laser cut mesh - no good for filtering, especially in our dusty conditions. It may make power but at what cost to the engine?

Thats true Sav, dont know how relevant these filters are and the performance in our SA conditions.

But I think for $30 to $40 - putting a drop in filter is worth it,(As long as its the right one). It wont improve your track time, but it might boost your confidence and make you feel nice. Lol.

Has anyone in SA have feedback with drop in filters or CAI in SA (Gauteng)? Let us know
