Randium Engineering Oil Catch Can with lil bit of DIY & Review

http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0001.jpg?w=650
Like I’ve stated, I went to Radium Engineering oil catch can. Thanks to Titan Motorsports for getting one really quickly. If you like one, you can check Radium Engineering Official site to grab one or PM Titan Motorsports.
First Impression:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0072.jpg?w=650

Just viewing, it’s not bad. Good solid catch can, solid can holder & everything else looks nice.
Concern:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre..._kit.jpg?w=550

One more from different view:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...kit2.jpg?w=590

As you can see from the photo, oil catch can is hidden next to the battery… which is nice and all, but how to drain that oil and gas? Because, my hand won’t fit under there. If you’re too lazy, you can buy this:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...ged6.jpg?w=590

Extra $30 for this? No thanks.
Solution:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0171.jpg?w=650

My solution? Went to Home Depot and bought these items:
1 aluminum bar
2 M6 bolts
2 Washers
2 Nuts
1 Rubber protector

Cut the aluminum bar into the size I need, prime & paint it.
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0022.jpg?w=650

Here’s a closer look. It’s not bad for can spray
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0027.jpg?w=650

Now, where this gonna go? Right here.
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0029.jpg?w=650

Anyone wanna take a guess? If not, I’ll just keep going with this.
Now let’s do before & after pics.
Before (front):
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0091.jpg?w=650

After (front):
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0040.jpg?w=650

Can’t tell much right? That’s the way I want. Keep it low profile.
Before (side):
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0014.jpg?w=650

After (side):
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0042.jpg?w=650

You kinda see it now.
Custom part:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0024.jpg?w=650

So what I did with this aluminum part? I’ve attached it to here:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0291.jpg?w=650

This is one of battery tie bar (front side). I’ve added washers & nuts to tie it firmly, so it won’t wiggle around. Closer pic.
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0030.jpg?w=650

So how that works? Like this:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0031.jpg?w=650

As you can see from the pic, I’ve connected with one of parts that holding the catch can. Closer pic:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0034.jpg?w=650

It fit like a glove. It was close to rubbing the strut wall, so I’ve added rubber between the wall and bar, just to be on safe side.
Now, where did I connect the other side with? Like this:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0038.jpg?w=650

It’s kinda hard, but it’s the bolt that hold sound generator. If you have that taken out, it’ll be really easy to install this part. Sadly, I forgot to paint this one… BUT I painted the spare one & planning to install it tomorrow.
When everything is connected:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0045.jpg?w=650

Problem/Issue:
http://ichitakaproject.files.wordpre...0053.jpg?w=650

I came along one issue. I try to twist off the dip stick… but I couldn’t twist it off with my bare hand. I had to use 9mm to twist it off. From the looks of it, it wasn’t perfectly matched with catch can and caused this issue. I wasn’t planning to use that dip stick, so it wasn’t an issue for me. If it is for you, double check EVERYTHING before you start installing them. My solution. replaced it with the bolt that match the catch can threads.

I haven’t had a chance to actually test drive it to see the difference (I’ll be doing that tomorrow).

I have the dual setup. I've had it for about 1200 miles now. I decided to keep it in its original location. I drain it by removing the bracket and catch can as a whole. 2 10mm bolts and an allen screw. Pretty easy. In all honesty, the allen screw isn't really needed as as the 2 bolts hold it in quite well without vibrations.

As far as performance goes, nothing really all that noticeable. When I changed my oil the other day, I drained the cans and they had about half a teaspoon's worth of oil. So they are doing their job properly. If anything, you're getting cleaner air in the engine, and preventing any long term carbon buildup in the valves and pistons.

I really like it since it's tucked away and looks pretty stock.

Thought about taking out the whole thing... but that'll be pointless, so I went with this rout.

With this setup, I can untwist off the can w ease & drain it without an issue ;)

I plan to use one of these to suck out the oil via the dipstick hole:

I used to use a big syringe and a hose for can draining.

wasn't it annoying to do it?

Good write-up and nice job on that one off bracket!

Question though, is draining that much of an issue? I'm not planning on having to drain my cans until I put it away for the winter, and even then I'm not expecting much more than a bit of oil at the bottom.

pretty easy and clean, much less of a hassle than moving a can to drain or even putting a bowl under and hoping you don't spill rank shit in hard to clean areas.

my current diy can the method won't work with , but in the past on cans with direct vertical access and no baffling blocking the liquid its been golden

it was also a really big syringe i had gf get from her work, like sausage sized

You'd probably want to drain it at least(the very least) every oil change. I drain mine once a month, especially on the crankcase vent can just to see how much blow by gets through. PCV side will always have some oil in there.

I wouldn't let the oil build up too high... Remember, air goes through there and sloshed the oil that's already in there. If the oil level is too high, there's a potential for the oil to coat the walls of the can enough that it can be carried by the air passing through, back to the intake system. Highly unlikely, but the possibility exists.

Like speargunsandracecars said, I would recommend check it every oil change. If you do race/autox often, I would recommend every session (don't need to drain it, but check it).

For those with the breather side Radium can (the one that mounts on the driver side and goes to the intake boot), are you getting any oil there? I've caught a lot of oil on the PCV side can especially after a track day but none one the breather side yet, even though I am supercharged.

I've gotten a miniscule amount of oil in there. Like, oil vapors that stuck to the walls. No oil in the can means your engine is running healthy! Either that or you installed it incorrectly. Or one of the hoses are kinked.

Hoses aren't kinked and I'm pretty sure it's installed correctly. No trace of oil at all on the breather side can, it looks brand new. The PCV side is a different story. I caught maybe a teaspoon of oil during the first 1,000km, and a whole lot more, maybe 3-4 tablespoons of oil, during the next 400km which included a track day.
