Side splitter project teaser. :)
6 Attachment(s)
So, I've been putting this together over the last few weeks. Please mind you that this is my prototype, so I used thinner metal so it's easier for me to shape, and it's cheaper when I throw it away. When I build my final set, they'll be about triple the thickness of these and powder coated a sexy matte black to match my diffuser, and vinyl.
My intent was to create a performance aero profile for the side of the car, I'm very much function > form, so I am sure this won't appeal to some people. Sorry for ya. These skirts/splitter give a linear 1 inch aero profile drop to the sides of the car, with a 2 inch aero surface extending past the sides of the body work. :) they should seal up the sides of the car pretty effectively. They should also completely out perform everything on the market that is too expensive for me to afford anyways. It's a very tough part to photograph, I had one of the local guys come by last night to give me some in person feed back. He said the photos don't do it justice. Feedback is much appreciated.

You're right, it does look hard to photograph. How necessary is the extra width? I wouldn't want an inattentive passenger to kick it on their way out of the car. How does/will it attach to the car?
Also, I like the look of the wing. What's its function? |
Looks rather sharpe in the front. Maybe lightly round or smooth that out?

I don't like the 90 angle look at the front. Imagine if you accidentally bump your legs into it. If it's not too difficult from a fabrication perspective, maybe make it taper-out or round.
I'm not expert on aerodynamic but should it be angled? Like lower front and higher end to generate any kind of down-force? |
I think as long as you rounded the front and then put a rolled edge on it that should take care of any sharpness. I'd be worried about getting out and hitting it. Would probably be uncomfortable to say the least.
|
Like I said, I'm not done. I don't do sharp edges, everything is radius cornered now. I've still got a little work to do on it.
As for angles, it's all about just creating pressure differences, side splitters work by stopping the air on the sides of the car from spilling underneath the car. http://www.rapid-racer.com/aerodynamic-upgrades.php There is absolutely zero dot rules governing aero parts like this, at least in the US. |
when are you making a front splitter? that's my next diy, but I cant decide on materials.

Sharpen it. Do not warn anyone.

curious to see how this turns out...
Do you have a front splitter to match? |
Agreed with smoothing out the frong a little and shortening the sides, but so far, I like what I see!
