New FT86 Info: July MagX

Scans from the July 2010 issue of New Model Magazine (Mag-X).

I've had this scan for a month but haven't had time to post this (or register for this site).

Unlike Best Car, that tends to have sketchy information at time and made the rumor about the delay, MagX is generally incredibly reliable and a lot more conservative about their reporting on rumors.

MagX states that the car will make its debut in April 2012.

Toyota is planning on releasing a car based on the "GRMN FR Hot Hatch Concept" that they have been testing, this car will be a RWD Hothatch aimed at enthusiasts and will sell for around ~$16, so for this reason selling the FT86 at the ~$20k mark will likely cannibalize each others sales. For this reason, the car will be closer to low-mid $20k area in price. This will give Toyota a little more flexibility with increasing quality and performance of the vehicle.

For the final design, Toyota will be aiming for a much more "emotional" design language then the conservative designs that they have become known for. There will be a departure fro the AE86 in terms of philosophy, while the AE86 was a hatch based on a Corolla, the FT86 will be a much more bespoke vehicle closer to the 2000GT in form.

do you have it bigger scan? I can't read it

Dark 07-13-2010 09:59 PM

If it doesn't look anywhere close to the original concept and Gsport, I'm getting the Z. The yellow ones on pics above don't look that good.

Red one looks like the original design. yellow one looks like garbage.

Midship Runabout 07-13-2010 11:39 PM

Yellow one looks more concept-ish then the red one.

+1 on yellow looking like garbage

I'm actually likng the wider headlights, and they're more realistic, but I really dislke the lack of fender vent and added volume.

Franisco 07-14-2010 12:08 AM

Either design is fine by me. I sure hope those dimensions are wrong though. If they are correct the length has gone up almost 4 inches, the width is about the same, and the height went up 2 inches. Bigger dimensions = more weight..

Midship Runabout 07-14-2010 12:09 AM

Yellow one is too curvy, very veil-side body kit like.

NESW20 07-14-2010 12:38 AM

i think they both look fine.

Matador 07-14-2010 01:29 AM

Not buying it. Had they said Toyota sports 800 rather than 2000gt, then maybe I'd sip the cool aid. They do know that the 2000GT was super limited and and cost more than the Jag E-Type of the time right?

Shevon 07-14-2010 11:22 AM

Not really feeling the yellow one at all. the original is what i want. Just like Dark said if it doesnt look like the red original i also will be getting a 370z.
