Is sport mode useless?

Hi guys,

Jalopnik had the following article with what I thought were good examples on couple of cars:
http://jalopnik.com/the-sport-mode-b...ime-1575888635

It didn't showcase the twins. But for those who have used this mode, do you agree with the article?

The sport mode on the twins actually does somethin, so no its not useless

It definitely does something which I was able to test throughout the winter. With it off, the cut in power during wheel spin on snow and ice was significant and I would constantly hear the traction control engage. With sport mode on, the car offered a much higher ability to kick the tail out and for the wheels to spin at times when I couldn't get traction.

Allows for more play in wheel spin and sliding before activating traction control.

It's not much more, but a noticeable difference. It's also stated in the owner's manual.

Pretty much the required video every time this comes up:

The different modes allow for different levels of traction control with less and less intervention by the computers allowing you to get more and more sideways.

he wasnt saying that its useless. just a design crutch

Sport mode in these cars is a nice intermediary step between full TC and no TC. It helped me learn a lot when I first started racing the FRS, coming from a car with much different handling characteristics. On my first lap in the FRS, I went out with TC fully off and spun almost immediately lol. Wasn't ready for the tail-happiness.

Are you talking about the VSC Sport button, or the Sport button found on the AT?

Both do something. The Sport button on the AT works great. Holds gearing longer, downshifts much more aggressively. Basically it's awesome.

^^^ This.

I enjoy using the sport mode in my AT when driving on twisty mountain roads, as it seems to have a higher RPM shift point between gears.

Lokutus 05-14-2014 02:37 PM

When I use the Sport mode, it tends to keep the rpm above 2k and delays switching to the next gear until I get above 5k.

manual transmission > any "sport mode" nonsense

fang_gt86 05-14-2014 03:26 PM

If you can't tell the difference, you're not driving it hard enough..:iono:

for an automatic, "sport" mode does make a difference.

For manual, I find it useless. The traction control is still too aggressive for any fun. I always have all nannies on, or I turn off everything.

The only time I turn on "sport" mode is when I pretend like I'm driving super fast, and I enable "sport" mode for ultimate power/cornering abilities. At least my wife finds this amusing haha.

Or, when Im trying to pass a car(like a minivan) and I cant, I blame it on the fact that "sport" mode was not enabled.
