Toyota 86 to be the name for FT-86?

Toyota has done it again and registered "86". What will the name be already?:mad0260:

Toyota's registered the trademark "86" as a possible name for the upcoming Toyota FT-86 sports car, possibly dropping the alpha for plain old numerics.

There are more rumors about the highly anticipated Toyota FT-86 than there are actual facts. The gossip's ranged from imminent redesigns to less-than-imminent production and even a Solara-like future. And the name?

Toyota "86's" The "FT"Toyota has already registered FT-86 and FR-S, so it's possible that the company is just covering its bases with the June 18th American filing of "86." Or maybe Toyota's trying to reach back to a time in their history when they built cars like the AE-86, which were known for performance, not persistent recalls. - http://jalopnik.com/5580452/toyota-86-is-the-new-ft+86

I don't think there's any point in just calling it 86.

I wonder what's going on.

86 name and FR-S trim level?

Maybe an '86 edition with styling throwbacks to the AE-86?

86 Edition?

Like the OP mentioned, they might just be covering their bases.

iirc trim doesn't need to be registered.

Hahaha. I love it. That would give new meaning to the old saying "let's 86 this place"

It's alright, but I still like FT-86, but I know that won't happen because FT stands for Future Toyota. I do, however, hope that they do in some way incorporate 86 into the name. You know, keep part of the concept's name. Maybe they could take the FR-S and combine it with 86 to make FR-86.

Maybe they did it cause the buzz here is dying a bit. (They're messin' with us.)

We have FR-S & 86 names now... now, which one gonna take the FT86 and which one gonna take the mini FT86 ver.

wouldnt it make sense if this car was released under a corolla badge, with the FR-S or 86 being part of the name (like trueno or levin where the FR-s will designate its the 2 door coupe :D) i can dream haha

Most probably just protection from some slight of copying or trademark infringement. In otherwords, just keeping someone else from trying to associate their car with some sort of FT-86 roots...
