My road bike fits in the trunk

It's a 54cm. The front and rear wheels are removed.

UDPATE:
second and third pics show the bike in the trunk with the rear wheel on. It was tricky, but it fit. On my bike, the part from the bottom of the chain ring to the top of the seat is just barely able to pass through the trunk opening. If you have long legs you might need to lower your seat to get it in.

Sweet! Now throw in some track tires!

MannyO 05-18-2012 10:41 PM

Looks like a bit of work, but I'm definitely glad to see that there's no issue fitting one. Now I can get that carbon Specialized Tarmac I've had my eye on

st162celica 05-18-2012 10:44 PM

Does it fit with front tire off only and the back seat down ?

I would love a carbon fiber frame, but I'm going to wait a few years. This guys only 6 months old, and so far I've been loving it. It's a Raleigh Revenio 3.0 which has Shimano 105 components.

Front and rear tires are both off, and the back seat is down. I didn't try with the rear tire on, but I'm pretty certain it wouldn't fit. It was a close fit with both off. I almost had to lower the seat to get the seat and bottom bracket to clear the trunk opening.

:(
Awww. I have a 54 as well, and I thought that it would fit with the rear on.

Maybe put the front into the spare well to clear more room? Probably won't fit?

When I say "clear the opening" I mean get it into the trunk. If you haven't seen it, this trunk is tiny. The trunk on my 2002 Civic was cavernous by comparison.

Nice! Too bad I ride a recumbent, no way am I getting my bike in there without cutting the frame in half. Thanks for reminding me that I am going to need a bike rack.

Khyron686 05-19-2012 12:08 AM

Awesome - think it would fit with aerobars? Ie was that a sticky part getting into the car? I might also try going in the door instead of the trunk.

The handle bars are currently turned, so they're horizontal. I can measure for you if you'd like. How far do your aerobats stick out from the base of your stem?

I've been thinking more getting it in there with the rear wheel on. I'm going to try some more this morning. Taking the rear wheel off is a PITA, and you get your hands pretty dirty from the chain. Not what I want right before I drive my new car :)

I really wish these cars had mounts for a roof rack like Porsches do.

Brett

Brett 05-19-2012 09:34 AM

Well I'll be damned. It DOES fit with the rear tire on! I'll update the first post with pics.

I added a pic with a tape measure too, and I don't think you're going to get aero bars in there unless you remove them.

Next order of bike/car business is get a hold of Saris and talk to them about using a bones rack on the car.

Stevieray 05-19-2012 11:19 AM

I wondered about this.

Thanks for posting the pics. I wondered if my road bike would fit.

Khyron686 05-19-2012 11:29 AM

I'm planning on getting a class 1 hitch put on mine. Then I can just slap on the hitch rack anytime. I think right behind that clear fog light will work.

Smitty_89 05-19-2012 11:40 AM

Do you think 2 cornhole boards will fit? Each one is 48 inches long, 24 inches wide and 3 inch height.

Brett 05-19-2012 02:45 PM

I don't have any boards handy, but I'm pretty sure they'll fit. I measured and it looks like lots of room in each dimension.

This is great news im a avid road bike rider and was worrying about this. You no if there are any plans for a roof rack or is that just blasphemy on this car?

3 bikes
2010 Fuji Track Pro
Fuji track
2011 Specialized Tricross Sport. (only 1 with quick release wheels)

ESBjiujitsu 05-19-2012 07:36 PM

im hoping my bones 2.0 will mount up just fine for the mountain bikes....but thats badass, what a clean travel setup! congrats!:happy0180:

ZetaVI 05-19-2012 07:54 PM

Good to know. Luckily, once in a while there are times I have a lot of cargo. I'm def getting a bike after I get my car so this helps.

I have a bones 3. I haven't tried it on the car just yet. Don't want to monkey up the paint just yet.

Protect your rear bumper and opening with a blanket or cardboard, so you do not harm it with the bike pedals.

Way ahead of you! There's a rug in the trunk under the bike. You can see it in the first pic. It folds out over the bumper :)

How much was that Scion bumper protector? I was quoted 180 to do it with a piece of 3M without the logo. Can you see the logo when the trunk is closed?

I don't remember how much it was. You can see it when the trunk is closed. BTW the top of the bumper there seems to be the part of the car that gets dirty the fastest. After driving in the rain, the rest of the car looks ok, but that spot looked a little dirty. I might be using a lot of quick detailer there, so I'm glad there's a cover.

FRSCoupe 06-05-2012 02:31 PM

I am also an avid cyclist and have a 54cm bike as well.
If the bike does not fit in the back with only 1 wheel removed, it could be a deal breaker.

I was wondering have you tried to put the bike with the handlebar in first? Front wheel removed. What I have done previously is rotate the handlebar 90 degree, while grabbing the seat stay insert the bicycle into the trunk. You usually need to angle and get the saddle into the trunk first, then the chainring.

Can you let me know how well this method works the next time you try this?
Thanks

I'll be trying to load my bike into the BRZ later this week. Also 54cm (CAAD9).

Also the OP has a couple pics, one with both wheels removes, and another with just the front removed.

ntaphse 06-05-2012 03:25 PM

I have asked and Inno and Yakima both have plans to make a rack for the FR-S

What's the problem with removing the rear wheel? Takes another 15 seconds. Just keep some wet wipes handy, plus it's helpful if you got a clean chain (ask me how, might as well thread jack from here on.) :-)

I have a Kestrel RT-900SL size 59, I am curious too if it will fit with both wheels removed.

YW-Slayer 12-03-2012 12:24 AM

My 5.2 Madone is 58cm - not entirely confident about being able to put it in the rear of the BRZ due to the boot width. Would be good if I could, though.

nab 12-03-2012 01:49 AM

I fit mine in as well by only removing the front tire and putting the seats down. Back tire first.

Robosteve 12-03-2012 02:52 AM

Funny this came up on the front page... I just unloaded my 56cm road bike with all my gear and an indoor trainer. Removed front wheel with rear wheel on, against the passenger side. Plenty of space left and could freely slide my chair. I feel like you could get a 58 in there if you ride with a lower seat height and shorter stem.

I took both wheels off, but looks like it would be fine with the rear still on.

I did use 1 5mm allen key to lower the aerobars down to get through the trunk opening. This is not an issue to me, as long as I keep the wrench handy or in the spare tire section.

Super pleased!

Tromatic 05-21-2013 07:43 PM

I need to see if a Kona Satori fits.

ethos101 08-03-2014 08:26 PM

I'm kinda surprised, but I just fit a 26" into the trunk with only the front tire removed; and I didn't have to put the front seats forward.

i also managed to fit my road bike in there in the same fashion. odly enough my bike is also black green ! weird

Skurge 08-05-2014 03:10 PM

i've actually been able to fit two 26" hardtail mtn bikes in the back of mine with the seats down and all wheels removed, along with camping gear for a weekend, that was a hell of a packing job!

Roadster19 08-05-2014 04:57 PM

do you think my trek excaliber 29er would fit? its a pretty big bike

no pictures but i could do it again if needed, there's really a lot of room back there with the seats down, though i will tell you we had it packed to the ceiling. luckily we didn't have much food with us or a tent as the others were bringing that kind of stuff, mainly clothes and basic things along with two bikes

i get very creative when transporting my bikes, here's one of my mtn bikes stuffed into the passenger seat of my s2000, the frame is under the wheels
