Suggestions on Modifications
 

Hey Guys, Im new on here. First of all, I have to tell you that I do not own a Scion FR-S or a Subaru BRZ but intend on getting one soon. I have been looking at this blog for a while but finally decided to make an account so that I would get suggestions for when I get one. One of the first things that I want to get are wheels. To be honest, Im not a huge fan of the stock rims. Which wheels do you guys think I should get? It would be great if you guys left suggestions for modifications.

staying mainly cosmetic and under $100. clear side markers should be your #1 mod on every color except hot lava and ultramarine as they are complimentary colors and don't stand out so hard. another cheap fast mod would be an antenna and plug and play LEDs for the interior/rear.

Rims can get pricey but I'm a fan of 5 spoke fatties. I have my eyes on either the Klutch SL5 or Five:AD X5:F. Going to have to wait for the holiday bonus for a set of those rims though.

I really dig the RPF1's.

If you plan to go up one inch -- prepare to have a slower car. The biggest improvement for decreasing track time is to have the same dimension (17") with stickier rubber (Michellin PSS).

FWIW my Enkei Racing RSM9 18 x 8.0 rims plus Michellin PSS 235/40-18 tires each weigh 0.5 pounds less than the stock wheels and tires. The mounted tire diameter is maybe 0.5" greater. The car feels better, not slower.

Clear corners, shorty antenna, tom's or crystaleye taillights, drop-in air filter (the intakes don't really do much on this car) stickier tires, and new wheels will all be nice starter mods...

Paint protection is a great place to start. The paint on these cars is thin and subject to chipping. I got Opti-coat professionally applied to my car soon after I bought it and am very satisfied with the results. You might also think about a clear bra for the bumper, hood, and front fenders.

When you increase the wheel size, the car's computer changes something I forgot what it was. But if you YouTube search "scion FRS change tires" there's this video where someone did an experiment where when they increased the wheel size, their time went up.

Short version: Using the stock wheels and just going to sticky rubber, lap times dropped by 2.6 seconds. Even with lighter-than-stock 18" wheels, the larger diameter puts more weight farther from the wheels' axis of rotation, making for slower acceleration and longer lap times (though better than with the stock wheels and Prius tires). You don't need huge tires on this car- they reduce steering response and acceleration and top speed. Add 100 horsepower and the story may be different.

Oh, and with wheels, lighter = better. There's a reason the RPF-1s are so popular-- they're extremely light for their cost. In 17 X 7 size, they're about $225 each and weigh a feathery 15 lbs, compared to the almost 21 pounds of the stock wheels. And removing a pound of rotating mass has a MUCH greater effect on acceleration, braking, and handling than removing a pound of non-rotating mass.
