Short shifter, bushings, springs etc. - Does anybody have these?
Hey guys and gals,
I'm thinking about getting a short shifter (likely the Kartboy), which comes with a rear shifter bushing. The MTEC shift springs are also a possibility. The reason is simply because I want to enjoy the shift feel as much as possible (the stock unit feels a bit odd after the winter - maybe because I drove on 16s and the gearing was shorter as a result). However, I'd like to see what your thoughts are (particularly for those who have them installed). Is this worth doing? Thanks! |
Nobody has these installed?

Wheel size should have zero effect on shifter feel, but more km's could have made the fluid degrade, or the warmer temps might be changing the feel due to a different fluid viscosity?
When you say you want to "enjoy the shift feel", what exactly do you mean? Do you want to remove any and all slop from the shift mechanism? I find the stock shifter is a tiny bit sloppy in sideways motion, but I'm at ~62k km's. It's WAY less sloppy than other cars I've owned, so I'm not too concerned yet. I have the whiteline "positive shift kit", but it's still sitting on a shelf in my garage :( |

As good as the stock shifter is, I find myself wanting to see how much more direct it could be with a short shifter or the springs (like MTEC). The famous "rifle-bolt feel" so to speak. It could just be the temps (that makes a lot of sense actually). The other part of the equation could be my clutch release - I feel like there's more "lurching" or "sloppy" feel on my release than I used to have (maybe I'm the one getting sloppy on technique). Reading on the "rubbery" nature of the stock transmission mount, shift bushings, etc. made me wonder if that could be it (anything to avoid putting the blame on my own technique - for now, anyway). |
Just got MTEC springs, will post results after install. Maybe a week.

Get the TRD Quickshifter and call it a day. Gives shorter throws than any short shifter on the market and is $100 cheaper than a Kartboy (which is the only short shifter I'd recommend). Also doesn't have any rattling issues the others seem to have.

I have the Kartboy ss kit, lightweight delrin shift knob, Mtec spring, and all associated shift mechanism stiffening bushings. The transmission feels fantastic, similar to a gated shifter.
However, if you are someone who is overly bothered by NVH, some of the bushings do cause a bit of whine. |

We have the MTEC shift springs in stock and could set you up with the Kartboy short shifter if you wish!
