Power needed to keep up with a Sti/ evo
 
Hey guys not sure where to post this at but I used to own a 06 Sti on a cobb stage 2 tune and loved the power and torque it had. Well I've had the brz for awhile now and looking to bump the power up knowing I'll supercharge it or turbo it. This would be straight line power also as I know the brz corners better already. Been looking at the kraftwerks kit but my question is how much power would I need to be in the same ball park to a stock/ lightly modded Sti or evo. Wasn't sure if there has been a thread on this but I couldn't find anything directly. Any input is greatly appreciated !!

Tuning is more than just power. Power =/= fast. With the right supporting mods, 275 rwhp is probably right around low 13s high 12s. Just a guess.

I realize that but I was just trying to get some rough number estimates.

Its pretty hard to say, honestly. Your best bet might be to look in some of the threads in here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=40

Most people in that section of the forum are running some pretty fast cars. It should hopefully point you in the right direction.

Before you're done, it may cost as much as it would have cost had you just gone out and bought a faster car to begin with. And that plan would minimize the untold number of problems and headaches you'll likely experience trying to make a slower car that much faster.

I know ... modding will make it "yours," and that's important, too.

Well you can calculate power to weight ratio. An 06 STi weighs 3350lb and stock dynos are upwards of around 260whp. So it has a power to weight ratio of .078. The BRZ weighs about 2800lbs so you would need 220whp to match the power to weight ratio of an 06 STi. I didn't calculate tq but you get the gist of it.

Wouldn't we need to take AWHP vs RWHP in consideration since he's talking about straight line performance, unless you're from a roll ?

Yes I suppose it would make a difference from a dig, but if you're going to get into that you'd also start throwing in other factors like tires. If I was OP and this was my goal, I'd shoot for 240-250whp and wider sticky tires.

Ya it would be from a roll I know it wouldn't be as quick from a dig . I was thinking 260 whp would make me happy and put a smile on my face.

I think with 260 WHP you have more than enough to kill one from a roll !

Hit the nail on the head. I did a rolling start with an STi and beat him by 1 car length at the top of 3rd. STi stock, my car was 220whp (Mustang) at the time. 2013 STi though.

Gearing can have a huge impact on acceleration as well, since I assume that you want similar acceleration numbers when compared to an evo/sti.

250 whp and some 4.55 gears should make the FRS/BRz plenty quick...:D

From a roll, gearing won't make much of a difference - sure, you'll accelerate faster in 3rd with a 4.55 than stock, but you wouldn't both be in 3rd - the person in the stock car might be in 2nd instead, which negates the entire advantage. As long as your gear ratios are close enough that you can stay in the powerband the whole time, a different final drive won't be able to make you any faster.

(From a dig, especially on a rev-happy car like this, it can make a substantial difference though, especially if you aren't willing to really aggressively dump the clutch)
