The Scion FR-S Needs More Power Says Nissan Product Boss: Nissan Mad???

Quote:

What’s wrong with the Scion FR-S? According to one Nissan exec, it’s too slow.

Hardly the first person to make that statement, it’s always a surprise when an automaker criticizes the products of one of its rivals. In this case it may also shed some light on Nissan’s future sports car plans.

“Do you still think the FR-S is an old man car,” we asked Nissan North America VP of Product Planning Pierre Loing during an interview at the New York Auto Show. A reference to previous comments by the Japanese automaker’s executive vice president, Andy Palmer, who said the compact sports car was a “midlife crisis” car “designed for a 50-year-old,” Loing was frank in his response.

“It needs more power,” were his parting words before scooting off to another interview.

Previous to that, Loing was less than open on the brand’s plans for its next-generation of sports cars, though he did provide some hints at the future. He described the two opposing sports car formulas, the first of being a car with a big engine and equally big horsepower ratings. This concept he referred to as “US centric,” commenting that such a car, “becomes almost unsellable in Europe and China because of CO2.” He even admitted that the appeal of such cars is dwindling in the US saying that, “it still sells in the US, but not in as big of numbers as it used to in the early 2000s.”

Commenting that the big horsepower, big engine philosophy is, “the current recipe of Z,” the alternative is a smaller vehicle with a lower displacement engine utilizing turbocharging. “We are still studying between those two,” said Loing, though it would appear the decision for the latter has already been made.

The next-gen Z car can’t shrink too much, however, as Nissan has reportedly given the green-light to push its IDx concept into production. That car could make use of a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylidner making around 200 hp.

As for the FR-S, Scion has announced no plans to upgrade the 200 hp 4-cyllinder engine in the car, despite rumors of turbocharging and hybridizing, or even just swapping in a larger displacement 2.5-liter unit.

Haha if he thinks the 200 hp FR-S needs more power, I wonder if he'll say the same about his company's own 200hp IDx when it's released. Will probably sing a different tune when the time comes.

torqdork 04-25-2014 04:13 PM

Sounds like sour grapes given they had to cut the 2014 Z sales price by over $3,000 after 2013 sales fell 10.6% to one-third of FR-S sales.

And here I thought the French lay claim to diplomacy. ;)

He's right, i only see you old guys driving this car.

Asians too.

Rampage 04-25-2014 04:27 PM

Nissan's biggest problem with the FR-S/BRZ/GT86 is that they wish they made it.

What's wrong with an Asian driving car? I never have an accident or driving ticket. I probably tackle autox and mountain road faster than you as well. Take your racist comment else where.

Nissan should prove their point by making a 2700-2900lb car with 230hp+.

Tromatic 04-25-2014 04:34 PM

That Nissan is fugly. Want to outsell anything in the FR-S/BRZ market? Re-make the 240 as a modern car. Leave the frickin' looks alone. They might make a "better" car, but if it looks anything like the designs I have seen, I'd rather drive around in motorized dogshit. If the FR-S is for "middle ages men", the thing they are designing is for teenaged paint-huffing flatbills. No thanks.

They had the idea in 2005 with the Foria Concept. Sadly, they never went through with it.

Not sure if racist stereotype or sarcasm. I'm sure not to reply you anymore, whatever it is.

Look at the color of the post. Why is it purple? Because it's sarcastic, it is not supposed to be taken seriously.

But if you want to take it seriously, then go ahead. :(

vh_supra26 04-25-2014 04:42 PM

Alright guys, take a chill pill and cool off ;)

jlugo711 04-25-2014 04:52 PM

Nissan's designs have gone so far south, I doubt they could make something anywhere near as nice and unique as the 86.

They're mad though!

vh_supra26 04-25-2014 04:55 PM

I don't think the EsFlow concept looks too bad. Supposedly it will preview the next Z.

That's hot. Though I can only see it makes into production as a 2 seater.

If someone told me that was the concept car for the 370z, I would believe it. Either way, good looking car IMO.

Jay2420 04-25-2014 05:39 PM

I hope Nissan releases an S16....coming from a s14 I would have to consider this but that company has been a joke for years, not even paying attention to their own community of car enthusiasts. SE-R spectra? Expensive Z series? I do not even have high expectation for the IDx, looks like a metropolitan grocery transporter.

What I'm trying to say is, come out with something competitive or even better then the 86, before you talk your shit

I believe after the 350Z, all Zs have been 2 seaters.

Anyways, I wish more people would just treat each other with respect. We're all Toyota enthusiasts after all.

True. Z has always been a good looking car, but it's forgettable somehow.

If their new car is as light as ours with 200hp at the wheels it'll be nice on paper but the look of newer nissans is kind of boring. The IDx is fucking hideous anyway.

I like most of the past Zs, but I think the current 370Z is ugly.

I like the pre-facelift 370, the current one looks generic.

I'd say this and the IDx are the same thing. Look at the overall size and shape. The IDx is the same thing, just evolved into an old Datsun style instead of that fugly fat G35/G37 style... Still, the IDx isn't great looking either. I fully suspect it will be the equivalent of a modern Silvia in everything but looks... I just wish they designed it after the S15 instead. A more modern, sleek S15 with the great steering and handling of the FR-S but with the same 250hp as the S15 would be awesome. At 200hp the IDx doesn't sound very exciting unless it is either as light as a Miata or they give us a really stout factory turbo engine that can easily take some extra boost...

Tromatic 04-25-2014 07:04 PM

Wait. Purple is racist now?

Around here it is the same. Everytime we see an twin on the road, me and my fiance always try to guess if it will be an old guy or a young asian driving it. One time it was an old asian guy lol.

I'm asian by the way for future racist comments.

B3yondL 04-25-2014 09:01 PM

Funny how he comments on it but has no competitor to it right now.

As for the IDx, that is one ugly motherfucker.

X2, even on the local forum pretty much everyone chose the twins over the IDx.

One time around Brooklyn at a gas station, a black guy comes out of a 6 series and says "You're the only white person I've seen driving these, it's all Asians!"

I couldn't stop laughing, we then proceed to talk about the cars, etc.

Where i live, it's very multicultural, so it's common to notice certain people driving certain type of cars. Is it a bad thing? By no means.

I'm sorry if i offended anyone, but its just my observation and i'm honestly not the only one to notice.
