Need to replace FP/MP gasket when installing header?
 

Hi everyone,

A lot of the DIYs suggest that the FP/MP mating needs to be undone to be able to slide out the stock header. I have a perrin CBE which uses a flat gasket (supplied) at the FP/MP mating. If I loosen this connection when installing the header, do I need to get a new gasket?

The midpipe to front pipe junction is sealed with a donut crush gasket. YES it needs to be replaced, b/c the used one is already crushed effectively and won't reseal very well.

I actually have the Perrin CBE which has a flat gasket.

That's odd. The midpipe/front pipe junction uses a donut gasket. It's the front pipe section that has the extension from the flange that you put the donut on. I don't see HOW you could properly use a flat gasket.

Yup, Perrin CBE calls for the donut to be remove dand replaced with a flat one.

Well, unless your CBE has been on for only a short time, I'd replace that gasket anyway just to be on the safe side.

I'm dealing with an exhaust leak right now and they're INCREDIBLY annoying. So, mitigate against them being due to gaskets and get some new ones just in case.

@SirBrass boo haha just put on the CBE last weekend so it'll be exactly 7 days. Might just risk it. Where can you purchase extras? It seemed to be the same dark material as the oem donut gasket.

Remember not to over-tighten. You can warp your flanges pretty easily by trying to cure a leak by thinking that tightening will solve all your problems :) I think that might be the cause of a lot of these OP/FP leaks lately. Use good gaskets, use the right torque spec, and if you still have a leak, then go for a more aggressive solution like double gaskets, graphite gasket, filler, etc.

Call perrin and ask. They'll probably be perfectly willing to sell you spares.

Edit: with only 7 days on the CBE, you can probably risk it and be fine.

Doubling up on gaskets has never worked for me... I wouldn't recommend it

@1Cor10:23 I just ordered a couple OEM 2.5" gaskets from ft86speedfactory for a good price. Can also check rallysportdirect, grimmspeed, etc. for OEM quality. If you're in a hurry, you can pick up a $4 one from O'Reilly but it probably won't work.

Yup, messaged perrin to ask about ordering a few extras. I'll give it a shot with the one currently being used (it's a graphite one that, on the day of header install, will have been on car for exactly 7 days). Hopefully good results :) My buddy did his with his used perrin one and seemed to have been just fine.

What a pain in the ass having the studs as one piece with the stock header turned out to be.

Oh I see you have one of the graphite ones. I have no experience with those :scared0016:

@chas3wba0 if i recall, the one included in the Perrin kit is dark in colour and very bendy - almost like a cardboard consistency.

I was told 50/50 given how short it's been installed. Will order an extra just in case.
