Shipping a used Vortech kit... thoughts?

Hi All, the member I'm purchasing the kit from says it will be up to 4 boxes and about $250 to ship from TX to IL. Guys who have received their Vortech kits... does this make sense? I know most of you all had shipping included when you bought the kit 'new'... so not sure if there will be a lot of 'know how' to optimize logistics cost.

Trying to save as much cash for other goodies... thoughts on best shipping options would be great. Maybe a vendor can chime in here :)

Vendors also have a business account with fedex/ups so its cheaper for them to ship stuff

It all came in one monster box originally, which would be very hard to re-ship that way. It's likely that the repackaged the IC, Blower, Pipes and hardware into different boxes. At least that is what I would do.

I spent 200-300 in shipping to ship from AZ to NJ. I also put appropriate insurance on all items. I shipped mostly from UPS, and a few small parts via USPS. There are a lot of parts, and a lot of large components it is pretty expensive to ship!

Whatever you do don't ship it like @Chase Bays did. Just ask @Shit Luck about that. My advice would be bag all the hardware and then bubble wrap everything and then throw it in a big box or a couple boxes depending on size and weight (will have to use the UPS/FedEx online calculators to decide) and fill the rest of the space in the boxes with popcorn or newspaper. I always keep that type of stuff that comes in the boxes of parts I get in case I need it to ship something one day.

I paid UPS to just box it for me and insured it. I told them which parts were fragile and some parts such as the intercooler got their own box that went inside another box for extra protection. It was wroth the extra few dollars to just have them package it IMO.

guys.. thanks. All good info.

I PMed Shit Luck for some insight. My initial thought was to ask the seller to ship UPS Freight with 4 boxes (IC, Blower, Pipes and hardware into different boxes. tx Dezoris) and add applicable insurance. I can receive it via a UPS store on my end. This would probably be the most economical way to ship everything, but not sure it's the safest (damages, etc).

Another thought was to ship the intercooler and supercharger via UPS ground, but everything else via Freight... but I'm not sure that's much safer than just over-packing it and strapping it to the same pallet with everything else. At the end it's coming on truck via Freight LTL or Ground.

Got a couple days to decide... I guess its a good problem to have :happyanim:

I didn't even freight it... I just shipped in a couple of boxes and it was delivered to to residential. :)

Yea, I guess the thought is going freight (on 1 pallet) might be cheaper than 4 separate boxes shipping UPS ground. Getting quotes, we'll see.

Can you still throw that big lump on the ole Greyhound? I remember that used to be the cheapest option as long as you are willing to pick it up from the station.

sissupr 04-21-2014 02:26 PM

wooo... super cheap. Just did an online quote. We might have a winner, assuming I can add insurance. :thanks:
