Early Summer Southern Ohio Driving Meet: SATURDAY, JUNE 28th!!!

Hey fellow 86ers! Due to the popular interest in our driving meet last fall (Link HERE), we're going to arrange a new meet and route. Always good to mix it up a little, right? While I have agreed to help coordinate everything, @Rampage has agreed to help map out the route. From what I have gathered so far, its going to be a little further west than we went last year, and details will be updated here as we determine them.

As of right now, the time frame is early June. At this point, I'd like to gauge interest on which date you guys would like to do this. I will say right now that I am unavailable all Sundays and one Saturday (the 21st). That said, if we are rained out the day we pick, we could decide whether to move it to the next day or another week. We'll decide that as we get closer to the date.

So, the dates that I would suggest are June 7th, 14, and 28th. Naturally, the earlier the date, the easier it is to postpone. My vote is for the 7th, although we can vote for more than one.

So what do you guys think?:burnrubber:

UPDATE: We have decided to hold this Saturday, June 28th! Meetup point will be at the pip in the map below (follow the link to reach the google maps version). We're going to meet at 11 AM, run time in total should be around 3 hours. Make sure to bring some light refreshments and supplies, cameras, etc.

As I said above, if weather becomes a problem (cross your fingers), we can decide to postpone to the following Sunday or maybe a following weekend. Keep an eye here for updates, looking forward to seeing you guys there!

You're actually letting an MR2 Spyder owner plan an FT86 meet?

He's an 86er at heart ;)

He also drives more than most of us, and has been down in the area a few times since we went last. He claims that he has found some good roads, and I am inclined to believe him.

P.S.--you should bring your powered Parachute

xbiker 04-16-2014 10:46 AM

I'll bring the Husqvarna. With slicks and a good alignment it is a beast in the twisties.

robwbright 04-16-2014 10:53 AM

@HunterGreene, you sure look a lot like JCVD. ;)

I want some aerial photos/videos, though!

May is very busy for Terry and kind of busy for me so we are out until June. But there is nothing to stop you pure FR-S/BRZ guys from going. Although Hunter did mention that he cannot do May either.

Southeastern Ohio like south of Zanesville and around the Hocking Hills area. It is still close enough for you Cincinnati and Columbus guys to come if most of us come all the way from the Cleveland area.

Amcox 04-17-2014 12:02 PM

I am in. I will be coming from Michigan now but I love the drive down there.

Where in Michigan are you coming from? I'm in Toledo and was contemplating coming down for this depending on the final date.

If you can manage it in google maps, do you think you could draw up the route your are thinking of? I know you have mentioned a few options, and I'd like to show everyone what we'll be traversing.

I was just looking at that. There are a lot of great roads in the area. I am just trying to link the really good ones that I know of without making it so long that it becomes overwhelming. With most everyone driving over 2 1/2 hours just to get down there, I do not want to make it so long that it is not fun anymore. I will be consulting with my brother who knows the area better than I. We might even want to use his home as the starting and ending point. He has a big place with plenty of parking and would be willing to host a cook out after the run if the group is about the same size as the last one in the fall.

I would have absolutely no problem starting at your brother's place. I usually plan to meet around lunchtime and be headed home around 4-4:30 (in time for dinner), if that gives you a frame of reference. I may or may not be able to stay for the cookout, so wrapping it up and heading home by 4 would be ideal for me.

I'll have to check some schedules, June is a busy month. But I definitely want to do it again.

I am coming from just north of Detroit in Troy Michigan.

Lytheum 04-18-2014 10:14 PM

Voting for the 28th right now. Gonna be in myrtle beach 7-14th.

00NissanNinja 04-18-2014 10:22 PM

Being new to Ohio I'd like to see what roads you have to offer. I'm in on any of those days, as long as I haven't flown back to CO. I've been itching to give this car a little workout.

HunterGreene 04-21-2014 09:46 AM

So As of right now, I actually will be busy the weekend of the 14th as well, so its going to be the 1st or 28th for me.

Rampage 04-22-2014 12:36 AM

I was checking out the routes that I would like to propose but they look to be too long if done in one day. Therefore, going to have to divid it up and save part of it for later. I have messed with Google Maps trying to lay out the route. It is a bit of a pain or I just suck at it but I will have something for everyone to look at in a few days. Then options can be discussed and adjustments made.

Rampage 04-23-2014 10:50 PM

Here is the first proposal for the Early Summer route. I tried to make it interesting and include some good roads without making it so long that folks would want to bail early after their long drives to get down there. The route is currently 2 hours and 44 minutes long. I plan on pre-running it before the selected date. Discuss.

This looks like a good loop. I'm assuming your brother's house is at the pin? Since I can't zoom in on the map (there's a way to make this interactive in your post), are there places where we could take a break at some point, maybe a photo op?

Also, you said "first proposal." Do you have reservations about this route?

Amcox 04-24-2014 01:33 PM

so my 7th just got booked so I am changing my vote to the 28th now.

Yes, my brother's house is the pin. It was all I could do to get the map to show the proper route and then get it posted. All my attempts to use Googles embedding process failed therefore you are looking at a photo of the map rather than the actual map. To get to his house you exit I70 on RT83 and go south to RT313. These are nice roads themselves with sweepers and some tight stuff. There is a little diner just south of I70 called the Banana Peel that would be a good rally point if everyone wanted to have lunch at 11am or 12 noon before starting the loop. Or we could just start from my brother's place. His driveway is a nice downhill where you could get a nice photo of all the cars from the top or bottom. There are also areas along the route which include a couple state parks and a couple of restaurants .

The offer of a cook out at the end of the drive still stands. That would give everyone a chance to eat, look at the cars, and get to know each other a little bit.

I do not have any reservations although I did want to include the Car and Driver test loop of RT56/RT374/RT664 but it is further west and including it would stretch the driving time to over 5 hours. I thought that would be too much for those that had a long drive in or out. I also want to run the loop to check road conditions because RT555 was a mess when I was on it a few weeks ago. I want to check the other roads because I do not want us to be dodging potholes or sliding on gravel at 55 MPH. I also said "first proposal" in case anyone else had route ideas.

@HunterGreen If you want to PM an email address to me then I will send the link to the Google map. Maybe you can do a better job with it than I did. It is my first attempt at using it.

I'll give it a shot, PM to be sent shortly.

And I'm good with a 2 hour run, Even I was getting tired of driving on the last section of 555 last time.

So as I see it now, we have 7 votes for the 7th and 7 for the 28th, correct? JW, did you change your vote? As it stands right now, I may have a commitment on the 28th, but I can work around it if its really better for the group.

No, I hadn't officially declared a vote, but I'm out of town on 7th.

Was on 555 last weekend, still sucks. Voting 28th.

Yeah, we had a couple of "moments" during our last drive on 555 due to the loose gravel at every intersecting road. I want to make sure that a couple of the roads that I have linking sections of the route together but have not yet driven are good.

I voted for the 7th only because I wanted to do it sooner but I am OK with any date except for the 14th.

Here is a video from our recent trip to the Tail of the Dragon maybe it will get you guys in the driving mood. We were on our best behavior due to heavy LEO presence. Little did we know they were busy at the motorcycle/sidecar accident you see at the very end of the clip. There is also an FR-S in the video. The driver is parked and taking pictures as we pass by. The video was done by my brother.

ghost86 04-24-2014 09:19 PM

Was on the Dragon/Skyway/Moonshiner the Wednesday and Thursday after you guys left, didn't see an LEO either day. Those roads were pristine.

HunterGreene 04-28-2014 11:05 AM

So....genius me forgot I have a college reunion June 6th-8th, so my original preference on the 7th is shot. I hereby reinforce my vote to the 28th, and withdraw it from the 7th.

Current count of the two leading dates is 8 for the 7th, 7 for the 28th.

microbionic 04-28-2014 04:06 PM

I voted for the 28th, but in reality I dont care when it is,...I dont have anything planned for any of the dates..
