3rd Brake Light Delete

Hey all,

Not sure if this is legal, but is it possible to just remove the 3rd brake light completely? It blocks a decent amount of the rearview mirror and is pretty obnoxious.

If nothing else, could it be replaced by putting a strand of LED's between your headliner and top of rear windshield? I could have sworn there was a how-to around here for that, but can't find it anywhere.

Thanks guys!

To not make this thread completely useless, anyone know if running without a 3rd brake light is legal?

Nope... 1986 is when the federal law mandated them to newly manufactured cars. Don't feel like doing the Googling on the specifics...

It is illegal. LEO may or may not stop you and give you a ticket.

Furthermore, if someone rear ends you, they may argue that you don't have a 3rd brake light, which may put you partially at fault for insurance.

This is the BIGGEST issue that I think people are over looking...

It's actually like this in near every state. The entire reason a 3rd brake light is required, is because if one of your main brake lights go out, the third brake light takes the place of your second, so the driver behind you doesnt rear end you.
