Cheap exhaust that will help with hp
Anyone know of a cheap exhaust that will help with some airflow but not break the bank and isn't insanely loud?
I was looking at the nameless performance 3" Track pipe but I have a feeling that is going to be loud as all hell.. and if anyone has it on their car near the portland area I would be interested in hearing it in person! |
Eh. I have the Berk Tech track pipe, which has a 4" tip. But before that I had the Nameless Track Pipe, and they sound basically the same.
Trust me, it's not too loud. If you don't change out the front pipe, it's very, very bearable, and sounds awesome. Here's a few videos I've taken of it. Stock vs. Berk - Fly-By. Sorry for the massive video spam, but these videos should cover everything you're looking for! If you have a request just ask! |
Im running this over pipe and front pipe along with the berk muffler delete and my brz has picked up a few horses according to the butt-dyno but its alot louder now.

The biggest power gains are had by replacing exhaust train components that are closest to the engine itself. So headers ->over/front pipe -> mid pipe -> muffler offer the highest to lowest performance gains respectively. So for the best bump in power you need to go for a full exhaust and that is $$$$. It's also going to be loud as hell. Catless pipes are less restrictive, so thats the way to go if power is your main goal. But then your car smells like $hit and you won't pass smog.
In short, to answer your question see s2d4's reply. Upgrading your exhaust is usually for looks and sound. Unless you go full, it's not going to be a night and day difference. |
Your best bet for power gains without a ton of noise is a header, over pipe and front pipe with the stock cat-back. Not going to be cheap though.
Any cat back is only going to get you a couple hp, so unless it's for looks and/or sound save your money. |

track pipes really open up the last last 500-800 rpm or so - it was enough to make a legit register on the butt dyno.
The berk single exit track pipe sounds great around town and highway IMHO, but the drone around 5000 rpm after a hill/canyon run is enough to give you a headache. |
Yeah, I had the other unmuffled track pipe very similar to Berk. The drone was annoying. That's why I sold it and went with Nameless Performance, although I took it off because its too loud for me and I don't like the single-exit look anymore.

We have a Berk exhaust on our FR-S and it sounds good IMO. I never drove the car prior to us installing it, but it's worth it for the weight loss alone.
I'd like to hear one with a UEL header installed Nick C. |
