Using E-Brake while in gear?
 

I just thought of this randomly the other day. But lets say I'm driving down the highway in 6th and just pull the E-brake. I know the rear wheels would lock up and you would pretty much drag your rear wheels a quarter mile. But if the car is in gear, and the rear wheels lock up, wouldn't that totally screw up your engine? It would yank the rpm from 3K to nothing right?

So if I was drifting like a fool at 7K rpm and forget to put in the clutch when I pull the E-brake to get sideway, BOOM engine is gone right? It's a scary thought I never thought of before.

The e-brake isn't a 100% immediate stop to the wheels. It's a drum brake tucked inside the rear brake rotor. So it would use friction to slow the rear wheels, as opposed to locking them up immediately.

It breaks traction because all of a sudden your rear wheels are going 60mph while your car is going 70mph. Which can put additional stress on the drive train, but it's not going to shoot a piston into the car next to you. There is even more stress if you continue to feed in gas while applying the brake, because the drum has to bleed off that much more energy. This causes things to get very hot.

I have, but I was just thinking in my head that if you yanked the E-Brake it would lock up the wheels within a 1/2 of a second. And since the the wheels tranny and engine are all connected that the engine would stop within 1/2 a second aswell which sounds pretty violent and easily damage something.

Fortunatly that doesn't seem to be the case. I have heard that some older cars have like a metal pin system that locks the tranny in place. Not sure if that's true but the little drum brake seems like a better idea anyhow. Thanks for the responses. I feel safer now haha.

This makes me feel a little better haha. It was kinda freaking me out at first.

The e-brake is hardly that good... Going in a straight like, you'd probably rupture a bicep before you could get the car to slow down fast enough for the guy behind you to need his brakes...

It works to cause the car to go sideways because its just that little 'extra' the car needed.
