need advice/new to autoX
 
ok I plan on going to my first autox ever. I use to do a lot of straight line racing in my neon srt-4. I'm excited to finally have a car made for autox, now onto the basics. I know there a lot of build threads but they are way to confusing for me to understand.

I would like to know where I should start with my mods and stay in stock class. all I have so far is a drop in filter. I'm on a very strict budget and need to know where to start. as far as tyres I'm going to wait until my stickers are bald. please help a noob out.

From what I learned: just go out and do it in your stock car first, before you even start adding mods. Grow your skills along with the car. Mod as needed.

I might be wrong, but others, please confirm.

thanks, this Sunday will be my first time. hopefully all goes well, I have always thought that I'm a good driver so I guess I will find out how I compare

Def stay stock until you figure out what you need/want...after driving in autox for a while!

Also, it's cool to see so many srt guys in here!

Stay stock until you realize decide what would benefit most. RWD is whole different thing. Lol.

In stock you can't do a whole lot so driver skill means a lot. Other than that a front sway bar and tires are the biggest things.

This car is what all the civic, neon, etc drivers wanted!

Can't believe it took this long to get it haha, I drove an accord and was following this car for so long and bought it the second it hit the shores

No. Just remember the key to SCCA rules is that if it doesn't specially say its allowed, then it is not. But I wouldn't really worry either way your unless you are in contention right away and care about trophies.

No idea. But its a gentleman's ruleset so they take you at your word. Would kinda suck to be known as a cheater, even if it seems hard to prove. I think a tune changes the exhaust note and it would be noticably faster. Maybe hook somebody else's tuning software can read it? Idk really.

But like i said, unless you're chasing trophies nobody is really gonna care

It'd be super easy to recognize most tunes on a stock FR-S/BRZ. The audible resonance from the new VVT changes in the 4k-5k range is pretty distinct and not at all heard on a stock tuned twin.

Like everybody said, just go learn your car before dropping cash on new parts. But if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, I'd say the only two items that wouldn't hurt anything would be:

1)tires. It'll do well enough stock, but the tires were designed to not be grippy, so unless you want to be sliding a lot, stickier stock size or close (not 9" wide and stretched or something) would be nice.
2) better brake pads - the stock ones do fine for autox, honestly but it won't hurt anything either.

Seeing as you will be in CS (C-Street), as others have already said, really the only major thing you can do is tires and one sway bar. But go out first on the stockers, get a feel for the limits of the car before you add more grip. I waited a long time (8000 miles) before getting better tires, but I had a really good idea of the limits of the stock tires. Afterwards, it was fun to see how much more I could push the car with upgraded rubber. With my recent mods, I've pushed into STX class, and I'm still waiting for a good weekend to go back out and push the car again.

The first and foremost thing though, have fun and be safe :)

One more thing to recognize is that autocross isn't easy. It'll take you a long time to get to the top against the local fast guys. Don't get discouraged when you are several seconds behind for the first year. Get rides with the fast guys and ask them to ride with you for driving pointers. You can do it on your own, but the learning curve is much steeper when you ask for help.
