Push-button start clutch switch
I have a Limited BRZ with push button start.
Recently I turboed and tuned my car. The problems I have are when starting, if the car doesn't fire RIGHT up, or if the rpm's drop below 500 for any reason, the starter engages when I have the clutch pushed in. This causes the starter to grind, and I fear I'm going to ruin my starter or flywheel. We're still dialing the tune in. With the AC on, the idle drops very low and if I have the clutch pushed in, the starter engages. Even when taking off in 1st, if the rpms get low enough, the starter engages. When I hear that the car is close to stalling, my instinct is always Clutch IN, but this causes the starter to engage. Could I wire an extra push button switch in place of the clutch switch? |
What are you tuned with?

Get your tune sorted rather than patching the actual issue.

The tune is getting figured out for sure.
The starter has engaged on me though on the street, not related to the tune. Like when I pull out of a tricky driveway, where I'm 45ing it out carefully to not scrape my front end, the rpm's got low enough to engage the starter. Or when I let a friend drive the car and he almost stalled it, the starter engaged. Each time the starter grinds and makes a terrible noise. |
Huh

I'm not sure where that starter logic comes from (ECU, wherever), or whether anybody has really dug into what settings control it, but this is a software issue.

Wtf. This is some kind of ecu/tune issue for sure or a short at your starter button. I've not heard anyone else with this problem.

I think it's just the ECU turns off the starter when the engine fires and rpm's rise above 500rpm (with the clutch pushed in).
System armed, clutch in, 0-500 rpm and the starter is told to GO. When I'm launching in 1st gear, say, out of a parking lot, and say I almost stall the car, so the rpm's drop below 500, clutch is depressed still (maybe 1/2-way pushed), the starter engages. It stops as soon as the engine revs above 500. Presently, my tune is good, but when the car is really hot, and I turn on the AC, the idle drops too low. The idle rpm's cycle up and down with the AC pump cycling on and off. The idle has gone REALLY low, almost stalling the car. If I had the clutch pushed in, each time the idle dropped to below 500rpm, the starter would engage. This was weird because my instinct when I feel the car beginning to stall is always "Clutch IN", and this caused the starter to engage. Once we tweak the tune it shouldn't be an issue, but it's still an issue when stalling, or nearly stalling the car. The clutch is weird on these cars, so this happens more than you'd think. If you're not used to driving my car, you'll stall it, or nearly stall it at least once or twice. What I want to do is take the switch at the clutch, and set up another pushbutton switch somewhere, so to start the car I have to push 2 buttons. |
Is it a physical switch on this car I haven't checked? If so you can relocate it...
