FRS HID lights?
I keep going back and forth between my decision that probably many people on here have also: BRZ or FRS? What it comes down for me is the HID lights and the front bumper. I like the front styling of the FRS including the location of the signal indicators. On the BRZ, the indicators are inside the headlight housing and almost next to the HID projectors. I really hate looking straight into someone's headlights to see which direction they intend to turn, so I don't wish to impose this on anyone else while I'm driving. It's bad enough when people's headlights aren't directed properly, especially HID's. So I'm really leaning towards the FRS now due to this styling difference. However, I am so used to my HID's that I don't know if I can live without them, it's like a night and day difference so I'm wondering why the FRS doesn't even have these as an option. It's almost a deal breaker. If the BRZ had the signal indicators in the same position as the FRS, I would have been able to make a clear decision and go with the BRZ.
So I guess what I really want to find out by creating this thread is if any current or future FRS owners are going to do some sort of retrofitting/swap to get HID's into their FRS, either from a BRZ (if available) or some other projectors out there. Also, was this a big deal in your decision between the two versions of the car. For all you lucky current owners out there, any feedback from night driving such as visibility. I'm assuming the FRS has daytime running lights. Would be nice to see some pics of the headlights at night and during the day, TIA. |
Toyota do sell HID kit

My experience with projector halogens like in the FR-S is they are nearly just as good as xenons. They aren't like the old reflector halogens. Basically, they're just a yellower color, which I prefer, but light the road up just as good. I'm hoping the FR-S headlights deliver like the other projector halogens I've driven.
The only "headlight technology" I've had and miss is the headlights in my IS350 xenons that turned with the steering wheel. Those were pretty neat. |
I know some companies are already selling HID kits you can just plug into the stock headlights (thread here). I am also guessing that a lot of aftermarket headlights will come out, as well. Personally, I am waiting for the HID high trim headlights that Europe and Asia are getting (either coming from scion or having to import them (hope not)).

I've seen some threads on HID kits. I don't really like these kits. Unless they are swapping out the entire projector housing, I would not recommend them. If all you're doing is replacing the halogen bulbs with some HID bulbs and ballast, I would not do that. I hate being blinded by those setups. I currently have a 95 honda prelude which I retrofitted some TSX projectors (clear lens) into and they light up the road without blinding other drivers. The cut off is excellent and I would not go anything higher than 4300k bulbs. I could not see at all with the stock halogens which really concerned me about the safety of driving under those conditions. I do like the fact that the BRZ has an adjustable/levelling feature for its HID setup and if someone were to do a swap, would that feature be able to be carried over to an FRS with minimal work. Maybe it's too early to know.

The luxury car thing was nice, but no longer something I want out of my vehicles. Also I didn't like the idea of tracking a $46K car and dealing with the possibility of writing it off totally. http://www.skream.net/images/is350.jpg |
Looking forward to how you compare the two when you get your FR-S

I feel like walking into a Scion dealership and getting all hyped and asking them for a test drive when these cars are fully available. Then just as I'm about to sign on the dotted line, ask them "oh I forgot to ask, but does it come with HID's?" Then when they reply no, I'll ask them "do you know where the nearest Subaru dealership is? Oh it's down the street, I think I'll walk over there so I can get HID's on the same fuggin car". Okay, maybe I might not be that dramatic, but of all the things to leave off a car like this. What year is this car for, 2013 and still no HID's while others are already playing with LED technology for headlights? Okay, the reason I'm pisssed is cause I thought my next new car that I buy would already have HID's and I wouldn't have to mess with retrofitting again. It's kind of embarassing when your girlfriend asks you what you got baking in the oven and gets all excited that you're cooking something, only to open up the oven and smell some burning rubber and a pair of headlights glaring at you.
