2011 Subaru STI Minor Paint correction

Hi guys

I want to start off with some intro about me. My name is Franki and I'm a automotive technician by day, a detailer by night. I love keeping my cars pristine. I like to share some of my knowledge with you all and hope to see some shiny FRS and BRZ on the road soon!!

I went and test drove the FRS in Baltimore MD and I felt in love with it!! yes I drove 4 hrs from NJ to drive it!!

anyways back to topic...

I have a 2011 STI in for Minor correction + Aquartz. This Subaru was the most challenging paint I ever dealt with, the clearcoat just sucks whatever polish I lay on it. I used Menz Powerfinish, superfinish, and AF Rejuvenate, but none of them worked. After 2 hrs of testing, I found baby oil does the trick with Menz powerfinish and Uber green polishing pad. This was not a full paint correction, but the owner really wanted something to aid his washing, so he chose to have Aquartz applied.

here is a video and pictures of what was done!

Hey Franki thanks for the post but all your photobucket links exceeded bandwidth.

Question though, what about the paint made it challenging? The products you were using were not cutting at all (i.e. clearcoat was very hard) or the products weren't bringing you to the finish you were used to (i.e. maybe indicative of a soft clear coat?)

I never had any experience with Subaru paint and the fact you're working on black is very interesting (preordered black BRZ)! However, I've never heard of using baby oil?

Use imgur - no bandwidth to exceed

This particular paint on this car is known to be sticky and soft. Meaning it heats up fairly quick, clear-coat then open it's pores and suck the polish in. The baby oil helped ease the tension ( I guess ) and polish removal was easy enough, not causing towel marring. I think the new paint will be different, but I won't know until I work on one :)

pictures are up again, enjoy!

Nice!! I love a well detailed black car. The maintenance to keep it looking that way is a bitch though. But well worth it.

Call me newb, but what's that digital gauge thing? I always see it, is it show how clean it is?

good question!

no it's to measure how much clear coat I have to play with before beginning polishing to remove paint defects.

Do we know if the brz paint will be different? I figured it'd be identical to this one on the STI?

Great pics and video btw. Delete the 'how to wash your car's thread and put this in its place.

I did get a bit nervous when I saw a ring still on your hand tho!
