Rear driver side clank and click
 

Time frame: This started about a month ago. Didn't hear that often, because of the radio.

Car mods: none

Transmission: Standard

Issue: When the car is accelerated there is a clank, much like what a flag pole makes with a metal clasp hitting it. Then after letting go of the gas petal or disengaging the clutch, I hear click. Both sounds sound like they originate from the rear on the driver's side.

Trouble shooting:
Does not happen when I brake in either directions, forward or backwards.
Does not happen when I rock the car back and forth with a friend.
Does happen in reverse and other gears.

I suspect it is something to do with the differential. It can't be a suspension.

Any thoughts or any one else encountered this?

I do plan on taking it in to Toyota, but they want to keep it over the weekend and a few day to just diagnose it.

I have the same noise once in a while, but never was able to duplicate it.

Have you tried folding down the rear seat and see if the noise goes away? If it goes away, then it might be the rear seat latch.

I thought of that, but the sound is loudest from out side the car.

I haven't noticed that in my car.

It could be a universal joint lose, somewhere in the driveline .....:iono:

If I were wouldn't breaking cause the same sound? My thinking is that the force of stopping would move a loose ujoint.

If I had a dyno I can reproduce it every time.

I'm actually sitting in the dealership right now trying to have them figure this out. I was reading the broken axle thread and it's got me wondering if mine is about to break! Like you said though, it's not a regular noise, only when the direction of pressure changes on the drive shaft (accelerating, then lifting off gas without pressing in clutch, or accelerating forward, stopping, then accelerating in reverse).

At first they were telling me it was a loose brake pad sliding around in its place... so I held up the E-brake and tried to drive forward then reverse and each time it clicked without rolling the wheels; just from the loading on the drive shaft.

Could this be an axle thing, even if the car is stationary while doing this??

A lose U-joint would usually only make noise when torque on the drivetrain is applied, either rotation (forward or backward).

You might slide under your car and see if you can detect any play in the u-joints of the drive shaft.

Ahhhh......heck, just take it into a shop ..... :popcorn:

They just came out and confirmed that it is an issue with my axle... something is loose, but not broken. Perhaps this is what's leading to all of the breaking axles? Also, my car is totally stock aside from replaced tires (pilot sport AS3s)

Bookmarked this thread....I've had the issue for a long time and the dealers look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them about the noise.

It was probably just a loose axle nut.
