Toyota Sports Drive Logger

Searched but didn't find any reference to this yet. Any ideas if this is going to be some real, useful telemetry or just a GT6/PS3 gimmick?

Edit: or an April fools joke? :bonk:

What's the joke about this? It's been known for a long time now, they even did testing in CA (Willows I think).

It's a cool idea. Improve driving, engage the enthusiast, link the car to the game everyone's playing already. Frankly I don't really see anything about this that isn't brilliant.

Carry on.

I vaguely remembering hearing about this a while back. This was announced with GT6 I believe. Not sure where they are now with it though?

what's not brilliant, is the price. 91800 yen = a bit under $900. :confused0068:

where they are, is discussed in the links above. it's being released for sale in Japan starting June 2.

Agreed. Why not just buy a nexus 7, get the Torque App, a bluetooth OBDII reader, and a tablet mount all for less that $400.

Then you get all the same data and more but you can see it live.

$900 is cheap when you compare it to proper driver coaching.

tahdizzle 04-03-2014 11:51 AM

and from the install pics... it looks like its where the Push button is? or if it was on a RHD the USB input is?

I wouldn't call this driver coaching. Sure you can "watch yourself" go around the track once its hooked up to your playstation. The problem is, unless you know what you are looking for (i.e. am I braking to soon/late, can i be on the throttle earlier, should I late apex or early apex, etc) all it really does is shows you what you look like going around a track.

Plus you can go to an one or two day HPDE session for around $500.

So between what I posted earlier about the tablet for telemetry and an HPDE session, you can do both for the cost of this system.

If it helps you do it better... :iono:

But I'm pickin' up what you're puttin' down. In the grand scheme of things and costs of playing at the track etc etc.. $900 is not "a lot" by any stretch of the imagination. And this type of real-world to virtual-world integration is very cool and very engaging.

Even if at the end of the day it's only for funzies, who cares? Look at the people who spend $900 for a steering wheel and pedal setup for Forza or GT?

I can see how it could help you do it better specifically if it was used as a coaching tool. I personally love seeing what I do as well as telemetry.

So if, say half way through a day of HPDE, we sat down and watched some virtual laps and a coach told me what I could do better and I could actually see it.... that would be a great tool!

I wish I could afford this just for funzies... but when I have to save up for a year just for wheels and tires (damn you high cost of living in Toronto:paddle:) I would rather spend the $900 on a nice set of tires haha

An AIM Solo DL does almost all of this for about half the price, just won't replay it in GT6 for you.

Bonus is it works on ANY track, or parking lot, or anything. No need to wait for your local track to be supported, and you can use it for autoslalom too.

The dl is about the same price. It's the regular solo that is half the cost. Either way though, definitely a better option

Agree. But what I hope to see happen in the future is that this kind of function becomes much more accessible. For instance if it was something you could log and play back on a popular and common device, like say a tablet or phone that everyone has. The tech is there. Like combining the abilities of Harry's Lap Timer (data logging) with Asphalt (arcade racer). All in an app that runs you maybe $30. Dare to dream...
