A set of clown-shoes: 205/60R16 tires on 16 x 7 wheels....

I haven't bought the car (and won't for a few years, since I can't afford it yet) but I'm already leaning towards getting the wheels and tires in preparation for the car.

I'm leaning towards getting the following:

16x7 wheels, as lightweight as possible (max: 15lbs.) with the offset to match the OEM offset.

For tires, I'm leaning towards either 205/60R16 size ultra-high performance tires, or 205/55R16.

Of course, the former has a rolling diameter of 25.6" (which is nearly a whole inch more than the stock tire size of 24.8" according to TireRack) and will raise the car about .4 to .5 inches.

Why might I consider such a size? I live in Queens NYC and I often drive into Manhattan, and I think these tires will be more 'livable' and absorb the terrible roads better.

So, I sacrifice some flatness, some handling, for more livability...

Am I being really stupid? Or, are my ideas basically sound?

One other tiny advantage of these clown-shoes is that since they are larger, they fill teh wheel well slightly better...

I'm from Queens too so I'm sticking with lightweight 17's. My G8 has 18's and not 19/20s like everyone else. It doesn't pay to be riding on 35 profile tires because you'll just bubble them or crack a rim. I work in Long Island City and my commute SUCKS. I'm already nervous for the BRZ lol.

Why not just get a beater to drive into Manhattan? Id be nervous driving a new car there on a regular basis.

You seriously considering buying wheels for a car you will be buying in "a few years"?

It's stupid, just save the money to get the car sooner, and not to mention the tyres will go old on the set and dry out.

I really don't think youll have a problem with the stock wheels in the city. The sidewall is nearly 4".

save that money towards the down payment

I would love a setup similar to this in tire/rim size....

I was thinking the same thing actually. I have a car on order, and have been dwelling on this for quite some time now.

The tires I'm looking at (Firestone Winterforce) are $20/tire cheaper in that size, and where I live (North Jersey), the additional ground clearance (Meager as it may be) will likely be appreciated.

Yeah, it'll mess with the speedo a bit, but overall, I think it's a smart decision across the board.

The Rocky Auto S30 is still a dream car of mine. It's the perfect Z.

Do NOT buy wheels for a car you don't plan to own very soon. A few years is too much. The odds of you changing your mind about cars is pretty good. Ask the 5x114 BBS wheels sitting in my basement.
