anyone able to get a pic of this in their car?
|
I don't get why everyone wants to keep the spare (I've seen threads like this on other boards to, not just here). The rigorous testing done on tires in order to get DOT approval is ridiculous. For the amount of effort it would take to get flat, you have just as much chance of putting a hole in the rad or the oil pan. If you work at a construction site and there's nails lying around or something similar sure keep it. For the rest of us, I'm surprised the spare tire hasn't become optional like an ashtray has.

I took a look at the spare at one of the First Drive events and it was a skinny spare on a steel wheel. It looked to be full diameter, but that was it. I'd guess total weight at 30-35lbs, but this is purely a guess. I know Pekingduck had some pictures of the spare in his thread.

I'll take it out. I'll use AAA if anything goes down.

Skinny spare is exactly what I saw while scoping out one of the first 86ers car's before he got to pick it up. I definitely wouldn't consider it full size. |
Leave the spare tire in. Sure, you'll drop some weight, but you'd be taking out some weight from the REAR of the car when it's already slightly front-heavy (though not by much) and also RWD. If you want to strip the car of some weight, the last thing you want to do is to do so in a manner that makes the weight distribution more front-biased, assuming that you are doing so to make your car quicker when the steering wheel is being turned when driving. Honestly it's not as if taking out the spare tire will suddenly remove traction from the rear, but there isn't much benefit just by doing that.

I'm never in a hurry. :bellyroll: My wife and I have used AAA a handful of times in the past couple of years and it's always been about 30min and never for a flat tire. Like someone else said, if I'm going on longer trips I'll take it; but to work and back I'd just leave it out. I've driven without a spare for years, and I do carry a can of Fix-A-Flat. A blowout, and well, I'll have to get towed. Lastly, it's about weight as much as it's about a bit more space to carry some things. I'm planning on getting a lighter battery and removing a lot of the airbox and sound tube with a CAI, whenever they come out, to hopefully balance things out. That's if I can even tell the difference. |

Yeah, I was kinda hoping people would weigh the stuff they remove just to see.
|
Ill be doing my best to document the weight of the items I remove/install in my build thread.

Will only remove for autox events.
