getting rejected from first

Hey all this might be something I missed while searching, so apologies in advance, but its starting to become a recurring theme where I can feel that im not all the way into first and if gas it and let the clutch out I dont go anywhere and i hear a whirring noise from it clearly not being into gear all the way. So knowing what that feels like I will take it out of first if I feel it isnt all the way in but sometimes even after i put it back into neutral it will not let me go all the way into first and I have to start in second gear. The only tranny mods i have are pentosin mtf 2 fluid and mtech shift springs. Is this a thing that happens? This is my first mt, but it really wasnt ever doing this when the car was still a baby, im at about 26k miles now btw. This happens maybe once or twice a week now and if it gets worse ill be a bit nervous. Hopefully this is completely user error and im just an idiot. let me know what is happening!?

I have had this happen on multiple cars. sometimes the gears are lined up that its a pain to try to get it in correctly. try to cycle through some other gears and try to go back into 1st.

Did this occur BEFORE the spring install? That would be my first consideration......not sure how many other people have installed the springs yet, but I had them on my short list of things to do.

absolutely it did, and from my very limited understanding the springs would only make it "springier" so it should be easier to get into first.

This should solve your issue:

If you are stopped and it feels like it isnt into 1st all the way, keep pressure on pushing it into first, then slowly and gently let the clutch out until you feel the clutch start to grab (without throttle input). it should drop right into 1st gear without any issue.

Edit: same goes for reverse gear, if it feels like it won't go in.

this isn't an issue with the transmission, it is very common on all MT cars

thanks, i figured and always try not to panic. haha the only reason that i even posted this is because the last time it happened a girl was in my car and she was like why did u start in second? hahaha i tried not to panic and thought of some bullshit excuse but i still felt like an idiot haha

dirtymax 03-21-2014 01:05 PM

like the post above slowly let the clutch out and it will slide into gear or what has worked for me on other MT if it happens all the time is drop it into 2nd then it should go right into first.

What speed are you trying to slip into 1st? From stop or downshift? I find that I have resistance getting into first anything above 10Kph

really you should never down shift into first unless you are at less than 10kmh (8mph) and coming to a stop. first is not designed as a gear to down shift into

this is the general rule of thumb i was taught. i dont put it into first unless its at or under 5 or 6 mph

^yes, exactly, just trying to make sure that wasn't the problem. Synchros no likey.

I just would like to say if u ever get rejected from first put it into second and then try again into first it literally works perfectly. Thanks for the pro tip

You got rejected from 1st?

Was it the first date?

ZionsWrath 03-27-2014 12:46 PM

When car is cold and trying to get first, I usually have to "punch my car in the face"
to get first. It usually slides right in after about 5 minutes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

hakkoo 03-27-2014 12:57 PM

Just get the car drunk and no problem :)

stugray 03-27-2014 01:07 PM

What the OP seems to be experiencing is a perfect alignment of the 1st gear dogteeth.
The above suggestions of grabbing another gear temproarily forces the gear stack to move a little which allows 1st to go in.

However if this happens a lot you might have a real problem.
If you have a probelm with the detent system it can keep you from getting into gear.

OR If you have ground all the points of your 1st gear dogteeth then it makes this more likely to happen.

Cold mornings make first and reverse pretty picky for me. I just slam it into 2-3-4 and it usually gets me right.

Sometimes violence is the answer.

CamryDS 03-27-2014 01:45 PM

I haven't modded my tranny yet, but will soon -- as far as 1st goes. I'm pretty sure that 1st is quite difficult to get into on a cold morning as well as 2nd.

I'm usually pretty gentle with the gears, though recenty I found that if I use a lot of force and throw it to the left hard before going into 1st, it makes it easier and actually almost effortless. I use to try to center it into 1st, but that was causing me to hit the gate a times. Especially when I go from 1 -> 2 -> 3

so I'd try a bit more force throwing the lever to your left more before shifting positively into 1st, same with 2nd.

Yeah, you're supposed to get her warmed up before it'll slide in.

XanRules 03-27-2014 02:01 PM

I've been on a few dates where I got rejected when I tried to get to first. :(

wait, what are we talking about?

You should've said you like to skip the BS and foreplay and go straight to 2nd.

Generally speaking you really should kiss her before trying to cop a feel.
Isn't there a better section for love life advice though?

Xinshadow 03-27-2014 06:44 PM

Alternately, Maybe a fluid change? Could make it smoother getting to 1st. Amisol, Redline, Moscato. Whatever works.

It's okay if first rejects you, there are other gears you can woo and if you're lucky they'll let you play the stick to get into them! Just remember, you always want to use the clutch first so the stick goes in smoothly.
