When car is cold and trying to get first, I usually have to "punch my car in the face"
to get first. It usually slides right in after about 5 minutes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

What the OP seems to be experiencing is a perfect alignment of the 1st gear dogteeth.
The above suggestions of grabbing another gear temproarily forces the gear stack to move a little which allows 1st to go in. However if this happens a lot you might have a real problem. If you have a probelm with the detent system it can keep you from getting into gear. OR If you have ground all the points of your 1st gear dogteeth then it makes this more likely to happen. |
Cold mornings make first and reverse pretty picky for me. I just slam it into 2-3-4 and it usually gets me right.

I haven't modded my tranny yet, but will soon -- as far as 1st goes. I'm pretty sure that 1st is quite difficult to get into on a cold morning as well as 2nd.
I'm usually pretty gentle with the gears, though recenty I found that if I use a lot of force and throw it to the left hard before going into 1st, it makes it easier and actually almost effortless. I use to try to center it into 1st, but that was causing me to hit the gate a times. Especially when I go from 1 -> 2 -> 3 so I'd try a bit more force throwing the lever to your left more before shifting positively into 1st, same with 2nd. |

Alternately, Maybe a fluid change? Could make it smoother getting to 1st. Amisol, Redline, Moscato. Whatever works.

It's okay if first rejects you, there are other gears you can woo and if you're lucky they'll let you play the stick to get into them! Just remember, you always want to use the clutch first so the stick goes in smoothly.
