Ticket for loud exhaust in Toronto?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone on the board has received a ticket running an aftermarket exhaust. Would really appreciate any commentary you might have!

I've ordered and will be installing a catless UEL + 3" Perrin CBE, stock OP/DP shortly after Easter. It'll be loud but hopefully not at a level that is disrespectful to other commuters / my neighbours.

Thanks!

Currently running Borla UEL, Stock OP, Invidia resonated FP and N1 catback and I haven't drawn heat. Cold starts though are loud as f* if you're planning to go out late at night but even then, I haven't had any complaints (yet) from the neighbours.

I have, but not with the FRS.

You will be fine with your set up, it will not be as loud as you think and will honestly sound like a stock BMW or Benz. I am running a catless front pipe and catback exhaust on my FRS and it is not that loud at all, only when you hit the gas....and I hope you wont be doing that infront of a cop anyway :P

I got my ticket with a straight pipe on my BMW 335i..... which I was asking for it.

You will be fine.

From my understanding catless UEL at mid to high RPMs will rasp with >2.5" mid pipe onwards.

I'm guessing if you could install a nice big resonator to keep the sound down? I would imagine cold starts in winter would be snowblower loud.

Great to know :) I'm thinking I shouldn't be as loud as that haha.

Yeah my main concern is cold starts in the neighbourhood. I'm thinking on the street, if it's relatively tame under 3K RPM, I should be fine - I like to drive economically (save it for the track). DP has the Cat and Midpipe is resonated. I'm hoping that the ~<2.5 piping in the OP/DP will quiet it down a bit. The deal I got on the Perrin 3" CBE was great so couldn't pass up on it + flexibility for FI (very far) down the road.

If noise is a concern, why not go with a catted UEL?

No such thing in law

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act does not contain a charge of loud exhaust.

What is used by the tailight chasers is UNNECESSARY NOISE which can be caused by squeeling tires , a loud stereo , or a loud exhaust.

If you rev your stock exhaust you can be charged. All that is needed to be proven to the J.P. in court is that the motor vehicle noise was UNNECESSARY.

If you have a straight pipe and don't make any noise you are good to go.(hard to do above idle).

But I believe you can be nailed with no muffler LOL !

Here in Florida you can run your Harley Davidson as loud as it can possibly be and ride in groups of a thousand. But if your CAR is a little noisy you will get a ticket.

I could never understand that.

I once got a ticket for too loud exhaust on my S2000. The car had been parked for over 2 hours. Cop said the exhaust looked loud. I asked him if he wanted me to turn on the car so he could hear it. He said no it looks loud and gave me the ticket. I took it to court and they threw the ticket out but fuck what a waste of time, paying for parking, booking the ticket, taking a day off work and paying for parking at the court. Fucking bullshit.

Here is your easy answer, look up the automotive by-laws for the City of Toronto and prepare to S* Rob Ford off if you get caught breaking them

WOW that's ridiculous. Wonder is there is protection for people in these situations re: opportunity cost of attending court session when the charge is completely bogus...

These pigs are really just employed as revenue generators for the gov.

RedFR-s 03-19-2014 03:00 PM

I have a Perring OP/DP/Cat back that is catted and resonated, and it is loudish on cold starts, but I haven't had issues with authorities. Some jealous looks from commuters though.
