What control options do you always drive at? (Manual)
I think I said in a thread earlier about considering buying a BRZ, but a BRZ would actually be my first RWD car I've ever owned. I come from driving Hondas, the RSX and TL and RL.
Of course the RSX is an FF, but the TL and RL that I've had are AWD. I've read around over the forums but I haven't actually found a thread yet about this so I thought I'd ask. What control options do you guys normally drive your BRZ in? Do you have have it on Sport mode or do you just turn them all off? I don't actually know all of the names of it I think Stability control and Traction Control. I'm under the impression that if I was driving a BRZ and I had them all off, I'd be at a huge risk of sliding everywhere but I don't really think that would happen haha I actually feel like I'm asking a very dumbass question but I'm actually really excited for this car and I just wanna learn more about it from you guys. Update: So I finally bought a BRZ, and I'd like to tell everyone that I actually drive with all the "Nannys" on. One of my reasons is that it's spring and in Tennessee during the spring time, it rains ALL THE TIME and randomly too. So it's better to be safe than sorry, I haven't actually had a chance to turn off everything and test it all out yet. |
I usually just have everything on by default. If I feel like driving spirited then I'll put it in Sport Mode. I rarely turn off Traction Control completely. I figure if anything were to happen and I get in an accident...the insurance company will be able to find out if you had your traction control on or off. The BRZ has something like a "black box" which records data about your driving for a certain amount of time. So, with that being said...I keep everything turned on for the most part. If I'm going to be speeding around corners or out of stop signs then I'll probably put it into Sport Mode.
Here's a link to where you can read about the Black Box on our cars: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25840 And here's a video I saw a while back: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8qggahGNH0"]Toyota 86 Traction Control Demonstration [SKIDPAD] - YouTube[/ame] |
For the first weeks I always drove it in VSC sport mode, it was the first rwd car for me and it was a huge fun making it slide a bit (but safely) on every corner. Now I just keep everything always on for normal driving and just switch to vsc sport if I want to drive it a bit harder. You dont need to switch everything off to feel the rwd experience... I see a lot of people crashing their cars because of that. (Im 20 and not a pro driver.)

Yes...what he said ^. Too many people crashing their cars because they're tuning off Traction Control at the wrong times.

I drive it with nannies on. Although, it has been known to go into full hooning mode somehow by me driving it hard.
No, really. Somehow, from time to time, when I drive it hard, I somehow hit the buttons near the shifter long enough to turn all the assists off (as in, Sport mode on with TC and Stability mode off :iono:) |
I turn everything off and stay engaged. Coming from RWD vehicles with much more power, I haven't found the BRZ to be very difficult to control at all.

1st RWD car--Leave nannies on. Turn them off only when you a) need to or b) are in a controlled situation where you can learn your car. Car is still plenty of fun to drive even with the nannies on.
|
I've always driven RWD and long enough that I've driven without available nannies. I know how quickly you can find yourself going "whoaaaaaa" so I usually leave everything on unless I'm in the mood to "be prepared." I often turn off everything (Hold down VSC and or TC) but I don't do the pedal dance. If I track this car I will do the pedal dance but under no other circumstances, because if push comes to shove and you have an accident bad enough to be investigated, you're going to be in trouble. *2 cents*

My BRZ is my daily driver, so I leave the nannies on. No reason to be a **** during the commute!
Turning anything off requires special circumstances. |

Keep the nannies on until you learn the car
|
I usually leave them on. I taken them off a few times for fun and a couple times to keep wheel spin going for traction (I drive it in the winter).
I have not found myself in a "controlled situation" long enough to learn the limits of the car yet. I not owned a RWD car in some time. I used to have an 87 Mustang 5.0. I used to kick that out all the time but I knew the limits of the car and my abilities. |
As long as I'm in a good mood and focused on driving I'll turn everything off, but I have a lot of experience driving RWD with more power than the BRZ.
If I've been drinking, hungover, tired or in a bad mood I'll usually just switch to sport mode instead. If you're not 100% comfortable with how the car handles in loss of traction situations then you should likely be keeping them on while on public roads. |
I have done a lot of AutoX and that is the only time i will turn mine completely off. When I tried a lap in sport mode it seemed to slow me down too much on corner exit. However this particular AutoX was an extremely tight one.
When spirited driving or on the race track its in sport mode.....just in to be safe. |
