Toyota/Lexus 4.56 FD, Torsen LSD, direct bolt-on, junkyard pumpkin thread
This is a:
Short 4.56 FD upgrade with junkyard rear-diff/pumpkin thread. I know it hasn't been found yet, nor stated; but... Which exact Lexus (IS or other models) or Toyota (old Supra, trucks or other perhaps?) pumpkins/rear-diffs, can directly swap/bolt-on into an FRS, and also has a 4.56 FD and torsen LSD inside it?? And, how to identify it (car model, trim, year and/or serial numbers, etc.). Let's keep it on-topic. If any new discoveries ever come up, please post and share in this thread :) :burnrubber: |
YOUR SEARCH FU IS WEAK! there is a big thread about this already

I've read all the threads before already, regarding Cusco and also the more affordable Weir FD upgrades... none of which mentions any direct bolt-on(same ds & axle flanges) pumpkin that has 4.56 FD and also torsen LSD. Let me reiterate: This thread is STRICTLY and ONLY for information regarding direct-swap junkyard pumpkins/rear-diffs (for a much cheaper option for a shorter FD, if it exists) ...NOT replacing and installing a shorter FD kit (which there are obviously already several threads on it) |
Did you search the DIY section? Could have sworn I've seen this done with junkyard parts.

It took me 10 seconds and a google search to get this.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45217 The answer you seek is in there iirc. |
As I already stated...I have seen and read those threads already hundreds of times
And, NO, the answer isn't in any of those threads yet: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...1&postcount=46 It is still unknown. This thread is for any new possible future info. If you don't have it, then don't post. If you don't have it, no need to try to make yourself feel better by basically talking sht with telling me to "do a search" as if I am incompetent. Are you guys even reading????? This thread is about any possible existing direct pumpkin swaps, from other existing or older cars that already have the 4.56 fd inside it, and NOT about installing new FD gears. Maybe instead of taking "10 seconds to do a search," automatically assuming no searches have been done, you should take 10 seconds to read the thread instead before answering. |

Like I said in my post... The answer you seek is in there, and the answer is no. The lexus has a direct swap, but it is a shorter ratio. The Supra has the gearing you want, but the pumpkin wont fit. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKG07305CBs"]Good Day Sir! - YouTube[/ame] |

I think you really meant, or read, that the usdm IS has the more undesired longer ratio, and is also a direct swappable pumpkin.. making it perfect for a "spare pumpkin" so you can have new shorter 4.56 gears installed in it, while still being able to drive your car while the spare pumpkin is at the shop (ie: no/less car downtime during install) The supra...yes, it too is a shorter ratio and are the actual gears used from Toyota and Weir to do this 4.56 modification. I know that. But this discussion is about any new info on direct swaps from the junker. The answer is no? How do you/we know for certain? Have you personally tried it and every IS or other pumpkin out there? If not, then please refrain from posting if you have no real useful information. This is about any brand new info that might come up. It could be from a truck, another lexus, a different toyota, or maybe even a diff make. It's nicer/better to have a clean, simple and even empty thread, if no new discoveries ever come about...than to have a bunch of people say the same "do a search" or naysaying over and over. If it doesn't exist, then that's fine.. just leave it at that and don't post and leave this thread empty. |
Maybe one of those threads would have been a good place to ask. Then if you found new info by all means start a new thread? Certainly would have avoided this mess.

But...it's easier/better to separate the 2 (for easier searches) since they are 2 different topics really ..those threads - are more focused on swapping the actual gears, quickly, easily, with no fuss in hunting for old 4.56 pumpkins that might work and with already known parts that will surely work 100% ..and this - possible used vehicle pumpkins, which is unknown, and will take time to figure out and discover. It would be nice to collect info for which exact models and trims of other related cars have a 4.56 and torsen into database...then narrow it down, then research in person and/or pics to see if flanges and diff mounts match up and might work. ...in other words..this thread is all about the hunt, the unknown and new discoveries ;) |
Well to start.. you won't find them in the US.
The IS use the same pumpkins but the F.D ratio are a lot longer. The 4.56 came from a 1988 soarer. |

With the amount of work Pantsdants did researching it out, and the extra information in the thread i posted that came from Jeff I'm sure that he would have come across it in his search. My suggestion (a serious one), Is to go check the Lexus forums andsee if anyone there has figured it out. They've been doing it much longer than we have over here, and I am sure every possibility has been exhausted. |
