Ratting when slowing down

I am not sure if this is normal or not, but every time I approach a stop light or stop sign in gear, whether its first second or third and let off the gas to let the car just roll in gear and slow down normally, I hear a distinct rattling or grinding noise coming from the tranny. It is quite loud and very noticeable and I'm just wondering if this is normal or not? Let me know if this is not descriptive enough.

Thanks,

Is yours MT or AT? Mine is MT and it makes that noise and I was worried about it at first too.

I just read through that thread. I had no idea some of our cars didn't make that noise!

Mine has done it since new below about 2000 rpm on decel and accel. I just assumed it was the engine lugging/normal flywheel chatter since that's what it sounded like to me.

Bro, that's the car tellin' you it don't want to stop. Keep mashing the skinny pedal brah!

Odd. I don't get that noise. I do get some rear deck rattle, but that's from the subwoofer, not the transmission. Nothing a careful application of a small bit of dynamatt won't fix.

I find that the car doesn't like to be under 2K RPM on anything but first. I was quite startled by the sound as well as I came from a GTI (very high low-end torque), which essentially loves to be at 1.5-2K when cruising.

The noise is essentially the engine bogging down. If you're under 1.5K RPM, and you want to accelerate, you should really downshift. Same thing with coming to a stop in gear, although I find you can typically take it down to about 1K and then disengage the clutch. If you don't disengage after dropping below 1K, (again, above 1st gear), it'll bog and eventually lead to a stall.

Thanks for the link to the thread.

Thing is though, I didn't see anything definitive. Unless I missed something?

I agree with all the points mentioned by other posters, it is just an annoying noise that is embarrassing to get questions about and not know what to say let alone having to put up with hearing it.

I would love to say its because it has a high performance clutch as mentioned by another poster but I dont want to say things without a definitive answer. I am not ranting at other posts, I am just wondering if there has been any other progress made in regards to this issue?

Pretty sure it's harmless just some loose springs/tolerances in the clutch/flywheel assembly. It's a common thing with Exedy clutch replacements on Subaru cars, I heard it on a buddy's WRX that just had a cheap Exedy put in it and I've noticed it on my FRS recently.

Noticed this video when idly searching google, I think it applies here:

I'm not sure if I'm having the same problem. When I go to slow down I usually pull the car out of gear and use the brakes to slow down. I can only hear the sound with the windows up and no music on. It sounds almost like a flapping noise, like a hard plastic piece vibrating against the underbody. It only happens for about a second or two and only when I'm on the brakes. I'm not sure what it is or if it's even the same problem but the conditions are similar

I too also heard a rattling noise when I came to a stop. For me this happened since I first bought my car and stopped until like the 3000 miles. Since then have yet to hear it again. I'm assuming it might have to do with disengaging the clutch or braking. As for me I assumed it was somewhat of a normal sound due to the fact it was still brand new. I didn't really think it was much a big deal since I felt no usual symptoms of damage. That's my opinion! FRS still running good!
