2014 BRZ Issues/Problems...Periodically Updated

Hello Everyone:cheers: I am happy to say that I have now owned my 2014 BRZ for about a month now with a little over 1k miles. I created this thread to update everyone on how the 2014's are doing in terms of issues and problems. I will try and keep this thread updated with information on any issues/problems as well as anything that gets warrantied. For reference, my BRZ was manufactured on 10/2013.

Now on to the issues/problems:

High Pressure Fuel Pump "Cricket" Noise:
This noise still exists on the 2014's. I got the noise at around 600 miles. I understand that this noise is common among the frs/brz's, so it doesn't bother me since it isn't affecting performance or reliability.

RPM Dips:
This occurs in neutral before I come to a stop. The rpm will dip to 500 rpm and it will feel like the car is about to stall, but it never does. I will have to tell the dealer about this issue and see what happens. I am not sure if this affects performance or reliability.

4th Gear Grind:
This happens at 6,000 RPM going from 3rd into 4th. I have tried switching gears slowly with the clutch pedal fully pressed and it still grinds. This is something that the dealer definitely needs to look at. I really do not think this is normal even though the car has been broken in.

Update 3/12/14: I took the car to the dealer and explained to them the 4th gear grind issue. They were able to replicate the grind and explained that it is a issue with the synchros. The dealer agreed to replace the transmission.

Update 3/27/14: I just got my car back from the dealer. They replaced the transmission with a new one. After driving less than 100 miles, I can say that the grind is gone and the transmission is very very smooth. It feels a lot different than my original tranny. Only time will tell if it will stay this smooth. No more crunchy feeling when I shift.

Overall, I love this car a lot. I think for the most part most of the issues that I have is very minor and can be easily taken care of. Only real issue I have is the 4th gear grind, which the dealership will take a look at this week. If anyone has any questions, I will be happy to answer them.

Not sure how hot it's over there at SoCal, but does the RPM dip only occur when you have the AC on?

Mine has the same symptom, but only when I have the AC running.

I have the same exact problem with the RPM drop although mines a '13. A/C is off, especially under hard breaking the rpm drops to about 500

I'm curious what your dealer tells you about the RPM issue. When I brought mine in I told them the whole situation exactly like you stated. I'm almost positive they didn't even attempt to diagnose or look at it at all. Gonna chalk that up to poor service, so I wanted to see what your dealer tells you

mine has the crickets and rpm drop other than that car has been great. Sounds like you have an issue with the trans, thats not normal. Had a Tacoma that would do that going into 5th and its nails on the chalk board every time

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to see what they say. I believe my RPM dips are the same as yours. Usually happens with a/c on or off, but I do notice it when I'm braking a little harder than usual.

Yeah I think I have an issue with the transmission. I have shifted countless times into 4th at 6,000 RPM and it gives me a crunchy feel when I shift into 4th. I think the 2014's are common with the crickets and rpm drop.

My '13 has done the same since day one during hard breaking.

There is a TSB for this issue.

I got my ECU reflash for the idle problem. Just bring it in to the dealer

shattered_memory 03-12-2014 08:01 PM

I went to the dealer today and they are going to replace my transmission because of the 4th gear grind. They told me that they will focus on the transmission for now and look into the rpm dip and cricket noise at a later time.

Rpm dip is fixed with an ecu flash. Crickets have no fix.

I'm in Ca too. First fill up got crickets. All gas here has ethanol in it apparently we are screwed there.

It's S-SB-0040-13 under http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21868, correct?

I scheduled an appointment tomorrow morning, so hopefully that'll fix the idle issue I'm having.
